Yanked the tranny today, put in the ATS Triple Lok, and all new guts to finish off the trans. Some of my OEM C2's were burned, and the C3's, well, it was ugly. I'll post autopsy photos later, cause of demise, beaten to death by Quad 165. Loooooooong day under the truck..

because when Mac and I rebuilt my tranny we had it removed and replaced..........all we did was the tear down..........inspect and rebuild..........

How long did it take because the shop I hired for the removal had it out and on the ground in about 1~1/2 hours.........:D

Post them PICS.............

Lock it and Rock it..............

VFR...why didn't you get with Eric and do the trans? He's only about 90 miles away. Was your truck dead-in-the-water?

It was done in a garage, on jackstands. I helped on one before, so this was the second time done the same way. Not for the faint hearted. It was 14 grueling hours start to finish, 10 am to midnight:eek: . The reason I did it myself was to save approx a grand in labor costs, and for some stupid reason I kinda like working on my own truck. So for the approx price of a SC Stage III with TD installed I have a full ATS with CoPilot. I've met Eric and I know he would have done a great job, but it was a $ decision.
Tools used:
Crappy scissor type tranny jack
Compressor w/air tools
2 3-ton floor jacks
4 HiLift jack stands
Usual array of hand tools, and long ratchet extentions

Done with just 2 dudes, kinda went like this;
Put truck up on jackstands (need about 21 in clearance on framerails to slide tranny out). Disconnect batteries, starter (broke plastic solenoid housing), all the electrical connections, driveshafts, plumbing, drain tranny, put tranny jack under trans, take off crossmember supporting transfercase, remove transfer case, unbolt trans and TC bolts, seperate from motor, lower trans jack, slide off trans jack onto towel, slide trans out from under truck, tear apart trans, replace clutchpacks along with other goodies, modify pump (CoPilot was done earlier), inspect for any obvious signs of damage, put it back together, eat pizza, put it back on tranny jack (we used 3 rachet straps connected to framerails to lift tranny off ground), put that beeatch of a torque convertor in the trans, put the whole mess back in (put new tranfer case adapter gasket in) reconnect everything, fill with Transynd.

I'll be breaking it in slowly the next few days. I'll post pics of the guts later today. Gee, since I've saved about a grand, I wonder what else I can get for the truck...):h :ro) :ro)

I think if you are confident enough in your work, why pay someone else to do what you can? I mean it might have been nice to have him there to help or at least someone that has done one before but, I think as long as you can read, have all the proper tools you should be in good shape....Congrats...

Well, here are some pics of the clutches, but my camera does not do closeups and I'm no PC when it comes to taking photos. I rode the short bus to photography class.

The good..
C1's. Looked new, could still read the ink numbers stamped on the face of the clutches.
The bad..
C2's. Most showed light discoloration, some steels with hot spots.
The ugly..
C3's. Roasted. All were burned full circumference on inner half of clutch, hot spots on all steels.

I don't know how to put pics in on this new board, looks like I gotta pile them all at the end as attatchments?? Well, here goes.

No problem fingers.... I think the art of working on a truck was started by shade tree mechanics and some of the best ones I know would never work in a shop anywhere, they like fresh air and being under a tree... Minus the whole hillbilly thing..

I take it you haven't gotten any more transmission codes? Can't wait to hear how you like the shifts after its done re-learning.

I need to decide what to do with my LLY pretty soon. R&R is no problem, about 4-5 hrs solo IIRC. I picked up a few tips from Eric that helped a bunch. It's finding the time to concentrate UNINTERRUPTED to do the intrenals that is toughest...

You can always host another dyno day and invite Eric. . . I guess you can't wait until after March? I'd sure like to see someone tackle the job first hand. . . cool stuff.

No more codes, shifts smooth as silk. I haven't romped on it around town yet, can't get over the feeling that I still have to take it easy like it's still stock:rolleyes: . I have a feeling I'm going to be over that very soon;), then it'll be time to hide the women and children. Did a pass of some cars on the freeway, had a Powerstroke Dually behind me, will lots of aftermarket doodads on it. When I mashed it at over 60 it surprised me and downshifted, took off like a rocket.:ro) Nothin but a cloud of soot and a small Furd in the rearview:D .
I think I'm gonna like this..

My break-in consisted if waiting for the engine to achieve full operating temp..........then I did 3 consecutive 0-90 runs with HOT/OJ - Level 5.

I think your fine..............drive it like it's stolen.

Yea, my break in was one easy take off, then shoved the co-pilot to full tilt and did a WOT run! Then went back to check the tranny fluid again. Good to go, I drove it 50 miles home that night. Mine took 6 hours start to finish, which we had a lift and an experienced trans builder.
