Well, since my last posting i have used all your advice, however to no avail.
I did manage to get the pump aligned and the van started flawlessly, but we had the thermostat housing taken off and a censor disconected when we did this. Reconected everything and it went back to it's old game of taking between 8 to 10 secs to start.

Not that it is all that long but it should start just after the glow plug light turns off.

I starts better when cold for some reason but when it is hot it takes longer to catch.

Spent all morning playing under the hood again, i'm getting better, can now undo the pump bolts without the mirror and light.

Still can't seem to find the one spot where it starts with everything connected,( censors, thermostats,ect....)

It could be other factors like type of glow plugs (ie 60g's or ??) could require a longer cycle for colder starts, worn injectors or weak compression.

That was Engine Coolant Sensor - when disconnected, PCM assumes -140deg F, and advances timing and glow duration for really cold start.

Would appear the Inj Pump was still retarded at that setting, and would have required further adjustment toward driver's-side.

Amount of adjustment would depend on your local ambient temps at that time.

Also, replacement glows are usually 60G's, and do require extended glow duration to provide same heat as original 11G's, particularly so in cold ambient.

Have been adjusting the pump towards the drivers side and have gotten the start time down to 5 secs.

Moving the pump by hand however isnt easy, would be better if i could find the adjustment tool shown in my book, ( so far no luck, seems like it may be a dealer mechanic tool only), however i'm not going to be detered.

Since finding the spot where it starts at 5 secs, i have move it more towards the drives side and found that the start varies greatly anywhere from 5 to 25 secs, with only a 1 to 3 mm shift.

I'm going to try and use a micrometer, to see if i can fine tune it any futher.

Thanks for your input.

You mean -40 *F , gmctd

I use a slim piece of metal stock to nudge it left or right. Very carefully, I might add.

-40F it is, folks.
I toldja - I got science on my side....it's them pesky numbers that are my enemy! ;)

1mm pump rotation is ~2deg, so it is easy to go too far, either way.

The ECT sensor disconnected resulted in extended glow duration, as well as advance.

Are your glow plugs 60G's?

What are your ambient temps?
