Here are a couple shots of mine, not the greatest, the driveway is narrow so I couldn't get a good shot. These are 285/70-17 on H2s.

Been running them for a while in primer after the paint blistered on my. Decided to make some design changes, but I've been out of town.

No, not stock. Those are 365/65-16s Nittos on 16x10 Weld rims.

They are Hummer H2 wheels straight off a Hummer. My Chevy center caps blend right in because they have a nice film of road grit on them. . . makes them look just like they belong on the H2s.):h

My truck with 265's and then with the H2's:

I have BFG 265's and they do improve the look of the truck.....there are several trucks in town with 285's.........from a look standpoint the 285's are the way to go.

i didn't want to raise my gearing that much so i stayed with the 265's.....that's the compromise size.......good gearing and better looks.

Depends what you do with your truck

Nosliw - Personally I would stop at 265's on stock wheels...I know, I know lots of guys put 285's on the stock wheels, but the stockers are only 6.5" wide....If you check out bfg's recommendations, 285s are recommended for a minimum 8" wheel.......Best of luck with your decision:)

hmmm :(

what about those hummer wheels? do you get them off ebay or right from hummer?

will the 285's fit on those?

403 your right the 285 do look better, but from off roading a lot, the slightly thinner tires do waaaaayyyy better. AND i wouldn't have to get new wheels....

since i've got a thread going, why doesn't someone tell me what a leveling kit consists of. i'm thinking of getting one of those. hard to install?

thanks a lot guys:ro)

why a leveling Kit ? also, a ton of guys run the 285's on stockers and have no problems at all. IMO, the 265's look too much like the 245's - much better of going straight to 285

for the look and better fitment of tires (if i go with 285's)

well, if gm doesnt recommend 285's on their stock wheel then that may be something they can throw at me later down the road.

I think those are great pics. I am still trying to decide which size tire to run as well... Probably go with the 285's but still trying to decide on the H2 wheels or others. Just not sure I would like those H2's on my truck....

Baimpala, are those the rims I sent you, They look great with the caps. I might have to get a set for myself

How does the 285 affect the "gearing" of the truck?

I currently have 265's. Like the look of the 285's, but am still undecided on what will be the next tire size I put on.

I do tow a 7500 ish fifth wheel. Daily driver, no off roading.

They sure are . . . I carefully left all the dirt on my center caps, and it makes 'em blend right in with the aluminum H2s. ):h

285 will just lower your gear ratio. Making the motor work slightly harder. Some talk about a big difference and others say that it does not make that much difference at all...

My mileage is down a bit (hand calculated) but it's hard to tell if that is from harder throttle or bigger tires. . . probably both.

Bigger tires will physically put less milage on the truck. Power can be compensated for (mmmm.....Juice) Suspension wear would be a worry for me.

baimpala
11-22-2004, 07:56 AM
You can always buy new suspension parts. . . ):h

Max Owner
11-22-2004, 11:56 AM
Well..... I always figured I'd have the money to kinda sort do what I wanted, to some degree. Not a t the moment. My truck will be high milage, when done. Parts will wear out, at the most inoprtune time.

But geez.....285's look so good.

Heavy sigh.

Did I miss something. . what happened?

Max Owner
11-23-2004, 09:58 AM
Nope. I have been out of work for quite awhile. IF something were to happen, I wouldn't be able to fix. Things let go at the most inopportune times.

I have the BFG's on the stock rims in the 265 flavour. I had a heck of a time getting somebody to mount even these on the stock rims as they call for a minimum rim size of 7". I wouldn't be putting the 285's on the stock rims - if someone will do it for you. That's asking a lot of the bead and the side wall in terms of the load IMO.

I ran 285 BFG AT on stock wells and abused them quite a bit then gave them to Tomac for some more abusing.
If they can take 12 second passes and truck pulls nothing on the street will bother them.
Now I got 285 on H2 and they are great.

If you run around MT all the time or don't tow - then the 285's are likely fine. I wouldn't use them on stock rims in a loaded or towing situation. Not saying it can't be done or hasn't been done - I just wouldn't do it.

I got the Firestone Destination M/T 285's on my stock rims and I plow snow with them. Hasnt seemed to cause any problems.

Max Owner

EMSi brings up a good point. Towing and 285's. How would they be for that? My fifth wheel isn't that heavy at all. Wonder what the 285's would be like for handling? Laterally?

Dmax Tim

THe BFG have 3 ply sidewalls unlike almost every other tire that has 2 ply sidewalls.

I pull some heavy bumper hitch trailers and they did just fine.
I think they tow as good or better than the factory junk tires.

If it wasn't for the cheap H2 wheels, I'd still be running them.

They wore even for me.

I run BFG 285s. I tow four different trailers, two not so heavy two very heavy. T he BFGs handle any load no problem. I've been running them for many years on many different trucks with no problems.

I have BFG 285's on my 03 2500hd gasser. 57K miles and tow 3500# trailer no trouble at all. Just air up the tires to 60# and go. 295's on the 05 no towing done yet.

what if i use 285-70-16 on my stock rims for a 04 Chev 2500HD?

and I never tow anything heavy.

Jim659

I don't know about 285 70 16s, but alot of guys run 285 75 16s on stock rims. I would'nt do it though stock rims are a little to skinny.

I'll get a "side shot" of the wheels on here tomorrow. They are MB Motoring "Type 70" wheels. They were purchased at Discount Tire for only $80 each. The style is the "Alcoa look-a-like" style.:D
