: First Impression - Predator LLY
tbone1227 11-20-2004, 03:45 PM Got my predator yesterday from JK and thought i would start a thread and update as i get more miles on the tune. First impressions:
- smooth, good power
- very similar to the edge unit
- defuel is not programmed very good ( flairing after shifts - it does get better but never completely clears up )
- turbo programming is ok, could be better
- works better when stacked with the edge/attitude as you can set the defuel option off which makes it run much better. and IT DOES STACK !! in fact it runs better
OC_DMAX 11-20-2004, 04:35 PM - defuel is not programmed very good ( causes rpms to rev after shift )
Does it flare after the shift or is it between the actual changing of gears (out of curiousity)?
tbone1227 11-20-2004, 04:48 PM a little of both - i just figured it was something with the defueling as ive seen that before on other tuners and when i plugged in the edge and set for no defuel it went away ?
BIGBLOCKBILL 11-20-2004, 09:28 PM That's good to hear,I just ordered a Predator to stack with my Edge Juice/Attitude. Have you tried any of the speed correction features yet?
Carbon04 11-20-2004, 11:06 PM Keep in mind that the trans is still learning the new found power. And most big tunes/stacks will flare on the shift at part throttle, it's the nature of the beast.

im not sure about that as i havent seen the TTS program do that - and this isnt a huge HP program, its rated at 100hp, the edge is rated @ 120 - but im sure alot has to do with letting the tranny learn it and i would think it would get better in a few days also - ON EDIT - it does get better after the alli learns and adapts
baimpala 11-20-2004, 11:25 PM tbone,
Have you run any lower tunes to see how it stacks? You mentioned you thought it ran better stacked, but that was at a higher level than I'm willing to run right now. I might be interested in getting it and stacking with my Juice/Attitude, but I can't run full bore just yet (SCII next Summer). . .
Thanks,
Dennis
Kennedy 11-21-2004, 10:46 AM I think you'll find the defueling will vary with APP. If you drive with very light pedal, it isn't noticeable. If you go past say 60% it also seems unnoticeable.
baimpala 11-21-2004, 10:50 AM John, what's this light throttle setting you speak of. I thought the throttle only had two positions? 0 and 100%. I am almost sure my truck is incapable of any other positions. . . . just curious. . . ):h
Thanks,
Dennis
tbone1227 11-21-2004, 12:35 PM Ditto what JK said - i cant seem to drive that way, but i have now been able to test it pretty good, and it shifts much better under normal driving rather than being on it hard which i seem to be every time i drive - LOL... Baimpala, i have now run all the tunes and its fine on my truck, both alone and stacked, be carefull about the tranny though - if youre running the edge on 120 already ? i would think you can run the predator on High, and run edge on 1, no defuel, low boost on 1 or 2 max ( only because it runs better that way ) and will like that set up - still not sold about the tranny holding that under hard throttle though, let me know.
baimpala 11-21-2004, 12:43 PM I only run the Juice on Level 3 right now. . . but the Predator would be nice for governor and tire size compensations. . . I might just have to give it a try. . .
Thanks,
Dennis
tbone1227 11-21-2004, 03:36 PM yep, also, you dont have to wait til 180* either - that was a big part in going with the top tune on predator
baimpala 11-21-2004, 03:50 PM That's huge for me since I only drive two minutes to work. i plug the heater in and everything, but still have to wait. . . Right now the Juice is just an expensive set of gauges.
coyotekid 11-21-2004, 11:51 PM How hot, in terms of EGT, does the Predator seem to run? I've read before that the LB7 versions have a reputation of running very hot for the power gains made.
I really don't want to be seeing much over 1200°F pre-turbo unless I'm trying to get it that hot. Is this realistic with a mild tune in an LLY?
baimpala 11-22-2004, 12:02 AM I think it's realistic. Running the Juice on level 3, I can hit 1200 plus no problem on a long hill even unloaded. . . Coming back from the NE GTG I figured that out. . .Put right foot in floor, watch EGTs and MPH climb quickly, watch Juice back down. . . cool.
coyotekid 11-22-2004, 12:20 AM Maybe I should just finally try the Edge. I'd still like to have the ability to adjust for tire size, speed limiter removal, and DTC scan function; but I guess you just can't have it all with one unit.
baimpala 11-22-2004, 08:00 AM coyotekid,
It looks to me like you're a candidate for the predator first, then stack it with the Juice and an attitude later. . . although the Juice IS on sale right now at kennedydiesel.com . . . .
Kennedy 11-23-2004, 11:45 AM The start of my dyno runs holding foot to floor at 1500rpm till EGT and TQ stabilize will begin at over 1225°f and peak at about 1360° with the STOCK tune and stock exhaust. For reference, this is using a fast acting thermocouple with an exposed tip.

Enigma 11-23-2004, 12:11 PM Has anyone laid down any 0-60 times with the different tunes available with the predator on the LLY?
partsguy662 11-23-2004, 12:22 PM Enigma - I believe McRat did....I imagine he's pretty busy with momma's corvette though..haven't seen him around for a while
tbone1227 11-23-2004, 12:35 PM Has anyone laid down any 0-60 times with the different tunes available with the predator on the LLY?
havent done just predator yet as i have the edge with it, and only have tested predator on the 100 tune: predator @ 100, and edge on 1 = 7.6 as fastest to 7.8, edge on 3 = 7.2 as fastest to 7.4 - Keep in mind that this is from the edge read out which starts as soon as you hit the gas ( no building boost ), and that im lifted 4" with 305's. The fastest stack is Edge on 4(90hp) and Predator on 3(85hp)
coyotekid 11-23-2004, 01:08 PM I guess I didn't realize that the LLY's run THIS HOT! Kennedy, do you have info on how hot the Predator runs?
Kennedy 11-23-2004, 01:30 PM The big tunes from any 100HP tune will hit upper 1700's even with the exhaust opened up....
coyotekid 11-23-2004, 01:37 PM Whoa! What happened to the 1250° "rule"? I guess time will tell, but I'm not sure I'm comfortable running my truck that hot.
tbone1227 11-23-2004, 01:57 PM coyote - keep in mind that those numbers are with WOT runs, hammering around for bursts at a time and 1/4 mile runs - i dont think anyone runs that high for a long period of time. and the lb7's that are running in the 13's are sure seeing those numbers or close to when running in the 1/4 mile as well. as long as your not in those numbers for a long period of time youre ok
dpower 11-23-2004, 06:17 PM Tbone...how does it compare to the bullydog? Is it worth getting if you already have the BD? Thanks Dpower.
tbone1227 11-23-2004, 06:22 PM much differnt than the bully dog - no nasty engine noise when cold, power on right away. completely different feeling than the bully dog, it seems a bit more smooth and feels alot like the edge, except for the defuel and surge in first gear. not sure about power to power yet but the main reason i went with it was that the BD makes too much engine noise when cold, i dont like how the edge runs on its own and wanted a little more to stack with the edge until the new TTS program comes out :ro)
earthcrusher 11-24-2004, 12:55 AM When stacking the predator with the edge. Do you have to disconnect the edge and reconnect oem connectors to program for the predator? And the reconnect the edge to due the stack? Thanks ahead of time.
