Someone on here had a engineer type print with all the spec's needed to build your own. I have them printed out however I dont remember the memebers name. Good luck.

look in my Garage for the print I made. I have yet got them from the machine shop so they are not installed as of today. I will be installing them as soon as they come in hopefully in a week or so.

I used round tubing, cut it in half put it over the sleeve and welded it back together. Then I put winch cable clamps over top. Three on each side. They have held up fine. Napa has the clamps for 2.99 each.

Mild steel (or better) and most of the stainless steels should work fine.

No aluminum. Some of the high strength bronzes might work too but I wouldn't see a need for that.

I had conversations with another member about the idea of tie-rod "splints" a couple of years ago.....we never considered welding the halves together tho' ;) :D

I was in a hurry for a pull and took some 3/8 rod and welded it right to the rod, sounds stupid, but its held for 3 hooks so far. Eventually ill get new tie rods and put sleeves on it.

:funnypost

IIRC I used round 1.5" OD DOM with 1/2" ID, chopped to length, drilled out to 9/16" (wrist breaker - bench vise and Milwaukee 1/2" drill) then counterdrilled 5/8" to fit the larger portion of the tie rod (close to boot), stuck a tie rod through it (to hold the nut in the right place,) welded the nut in place, took it apart, antisiezed the snot out of it and installed.

Um...proven ones are less than $90.00 (http://www.crankitupdiesel.com/driveline.htm)Why would you waste your time and take a chance screwing up several hundred dollars worth of parts to save less than $100? 2 me it isn't really worth getting my hands dirty for that.;)

Gee, I don't know. When I made mine you couldn't buy 'em for under $150. Got the idea from my buddy who had made his own before Diesel Place was even around. $150 or $15 worth of material and a little time in the shop. Some people, like me, like to do some things on their own when they can. For me it's a stress reliever and a way to save some cash for the more important upgrades.

Not to say everyone should make their own. Superdiesel and others make an excellent set. And not everyone has access to the tools to make their own, I did and like doing things like that.

For me it's a reason to get out of the house and away from the wife. ):h

:joke: ...I luv my wife, it's the list of Hunny'dos that I hate.

It's not a money thing to me, more of a pride of workmanship thing. I get a ton more enjoyment out of building something and seeing it work, then buying it.

I made mine from 1/4 wall round tubing. I was going to put cable clamps on each end but ended up welding the sleeve to my original jam nut. Works great. I bought two extra jam nuts in case i need to align it later on.
