: You guys know my enemic truck right?
CanadianRigger 11-19-2004, 12:55 AM Done went and got me a re-flash.
I'm sure most of you don't recognise the name of it in my signature but its very popular throughout North America (some of you will know it though). Some of you may even be running his re-flash and not even know it. This guy really seems to know what he's doing, he wasn't happy until he had tweaked this thing for 3 hours before i drove away!
The dyno had a dead supercharged truck sitting on it and i couldn't get mine on it for at least a couple of weeks, by that time i'll be back at work so i won't likely be getting it dyno'd.
Now i have lotsa of smoke on take off, lotsa rattle at low RPM, gained maybe a second on the 0 - 60 times. (I have to confirm this though)
Seat of pants dyno says i gained, most likely pulling power at higher rpms, take off is about the same as it was before the re-flash and then the turbo spools up....kinda sets ya back in the seat a bit, still shifts around 3350 rpm.
Disconnected the 10K pot.
I hooked up the pyro finally and have a couple of numbers to share.
60 Mph cruising - Boost is steady @ 6 psi - pyro 450 F
75 Mph cruising - Boost is steady @ 9 psi - Pyro 490 F
Foot in it hard boost whacks 16 psi fast and slowly drops as speed increases but will not fall below 12-13 psi
100 Mph (I didn't think it would do that) Boost still holding 12-13 psi EGT's maxed out @ 990 F and slowly falling off.
Fuel rate when in it hard 79mm and holding pretty steady, falls slightly when shifting but comes right back up.
Waste gate DC - Pretty much holds at 100% most all the time.
Cruise on and going downhill - Boost doesn't fall below 5 psi.
On schedule for Saturday, mandrel bent x-over and lots of heat tape.
Monday - Shift Kit
Still trying to find injectors!!!

Very interesting. What did the reflash cost?
CanadianRigger 11-19-2004, 01:19 AM Including taxes $763.98 Canadian.
$595 US
I thought i should also add this.
35 DAY MONEYBACK GUARANTEE on ANY Performance Chip/Recalibrated PCM Product. Lifetime Warranty on any Chip or PCM. 1 Year warranty on performance add-on Modules.
How can you possibly go wrong?Edited by: CanadianRigger
Turbine Doc 11-19-2004, 04:13 AM $86 delta on price not too bad Heath is $509 US, even though not advertised I'd be willing to bet Bill will stand by with same or better warranty, I do know many version 1 OBDI program chip holders got free or discounted upgrade to version 2. Edited by: Turbine Doc
steiner43511 11-19-2004, 07:53 PM what shift kit are you gonna go with? there is another thread currently open on the topic if your interested.
CanadianRigger 11-19-2004, 09:39 PM I'm not sure on which kit to go with, the tranny shop recommends one (name eludes me) for this tranny while the guy that did the PCM says to go with transgo, i'm not sure what to go with but i'd be leaning to what a tranny shop would suggest as thats their field. Personaly i don't have the experience to make my own decision on this.
chevy_9465 11-20-2004, 11:29 PM does he sell chips for the 94' and 95' models
CanadianRigger 11-21-2004, 06:54 PM Yuppers, he sells em all. All brands, gassers, diesels, complete re-flashes, e-proms, everything as far as i know.
Texas Diesel Guy 11-21-2004, 10:35 PM From what I gather, this $600 reflash didn't gain you much, or am I reading you wrong?

That would be correct TDG but i'd have to say that it hasn't been given a honest chance until the injectors have been done. Its is noticably crisper on the throttle, has one hell of a rattle up to around 1500 rpm, i may have been off on the boost numbers i posted before as my NEW boost gauge seems to be defective, darn thing moves around with a tap on it, it seems to stick in certain spots and then jump free both with increasing and decreasing boost pressures. I posted fuel rates and such after the flash, all numbers were good, only thing is that the stumble appears to still be there, you know, the surge i had every now and again before, still has it so i'm guessing thats in the pump or could it be a bad PMD with only something like 30,000 km's on it?
Thoughts anyone?
Turbine Doc 11-22-2004, 12:14 PM Even with a reflash you are up against IAT limiter which will defuel (what is your IAT) 16psi boost is a LOT of boost; non IC or WMI 10 psi should be about max without some sort of cooling, still need good lift pump delivery(what is lift pump supply pressure to IP), and if on vac controlled WG you are still at mercy of WG sol, what is vac to/from WG solenoid.
quantum mechanic 11-22-2004, 12:50 PM It seems like the reflash should have adjusted the tranny shift curves and pressures. Wester's chips say they correct that.
Did you look at the APP outputs at idle and then rev it to make it surge and maybe watch des/ act time to see what number's are jumping. A faulty APP will have a volt spike with throttle engagement. That is, you depress the pedal and the volts increase, not decrease (it's three potentiometer's, resisting three volt signals .5v L 4.5V M and 4.99v H).
 ALso, with a reflash, the ECM won't know if you bypass the wg 'noid and put the vac direct to the actuator for a test run. This was the configuration mine was in when I lost all boost and decieded to spring it closed. wild swings are more indicitive of wg solenoid or minor leak than a faulty gauge.
The gm-8 is little more efficient than the 4, I can see the advantage of adding a 50-65% efficient turbo at the desired boost range and then intercooling for an additional 20-30 % efficiency, only thing missing then is 18:1 cr, which I'd do first time the block came out, if possible.
CanadianRigger 11-22-2004, 10:07 PM Ok today i had a chance to get some better numbers.
0-60 is now 13 seconds before trans kit installed, previous before re-flash was 15 seconds. Still waiting for my other boost guage to come in. Mandrel bent x-over should be here late tomorrow, maybe get it in on Weds.
Trans kit didn't seem to change 0-60's and if it did i'd need a stopwatch to know for sure. Nice snap going through the gears now. When the reflash was done he didn't change shift points as he figure they're wouldn't be much difference anyways before the shift kit was installed, i can bring the truck back anytime for a re-program as many times as i'd like for free, he also wants to put it on the dyno once i've finished with the mods.
I'm still having trouble finding injectors worth their salt around here, i may have to order south of the border, another problem i'm having is getting someone to install them that knows what their doing.
How tough is it to do the injectors if i do them myself and what special tools will i need to buy?
IAT's? I have no idea what they are running at with the boost up, need some kind guage for that. EGT's max out around 980F when pushing it hard.
What is the safe limit again post turbo?
I have to go back and check one of QM's posts to see what his max IAT's were, i'm re-fabbing the intake and don't particularly want to melt down a hose and suck it into the turbo, also going to re-fab that stupid snorkel as time permits.
Texas Diesel Guy 11-22-2004, 10:19 PM Hey CR, send that truck my way, I'll set you up with some Hi-Pops, and a matching pump ;)
CanadianRigger 11-22-2004, 10:41 PM Oakville Ontario? I thought you were in Texas? At any rate how about you get the stuff, send it here and i'll find someone to do the install. BTW appears the re-flash gave me a couple of seconds, now just have to wonder if the $$$ is worth 2 seconds. Probably wouldn't be to alot of people but i think it was so far. The real trial will be in pulling power, then my IAT's will probably go through the roof, gonna have to do something about that soon, but hey, it'll be -40 here soon so i'll make it till spring.
TDG i have 16 injectors here from a 94 and 95, can they be rebuilt and if so how much and do you wanna give em a shot?
quantum mechanic 11-22-2004, 11:39 PM CR,
You're burning massive fuel for that heat with ambient ~40*f.
Tex is the texas canadian diesel guy.
CanadianRigger 11-23-2004, 12:11 AM Those EGT's i posted earlier were maximum i could get, no load, full throttle 95+ MPH, ambient temps around +5C. Normal cruising EGT's are 420-500, 600-650 when i step on it to pass someone.
So your saying TDG is Canadian then? I'm confused here. Maybe i never looked at the signature close before, just assumed he was from Texas. Brain Fart...
Turbine Doc 11-23-2004, 12:42 PM Watch on changing reflash shift points with a shift kit, it can hit the trans pretty hard, I had to have mine detuned on the shift some because I did not want to pull my shift kit.
For IAT that is displayed on a scanner, MT2500 readily found will snapshot all of your data, scanner will also tell you if you are defueling (which is what I suspect without cooling of some fashion), if you can't locate a scanner next best thing is a thermocouple slipped in at the post turbo coupling. Termocolples can be bought at SEARS for about $30, a good tool that converts a digital volt meter to a -40F to 1500F thermometer, put long wires on the output and you can puty the meter in the cab and read temp while driving.
Word of caution sensor wire is thin, prolonged exposure to high velocity air could break off the tip and send to the engine, use for short intermittent tests.
Texas Diesel Guy 11-23-2004, 07:59 PM born and raised in Abilene Texas, my dad owns Abilene Diesel, I moved here just a year ago, my wife is the Canadian one in the bunch, and the boy, well he's somma both.
So, CR, about those injectors, are you looking to rebuild two sets or exchange two sets for one set of Hi-Pops? I think I can help you either way, only problem is I'm a pump man, not an injector man, so I can't do that for free.
As far as IP, I think we can work something out there too...
CanadianRigger 11-23-2004, 08:30 PM Shift points haven't been changed and it seems to be working real nice. From what i can tell driving its not cutting fuel until 95 MPH and about 3200 RPM then she starts a slight sputter EGT's around 900F. Spend over 2 hours at the exhaust shop trying to free up x-over bolts. Finally have em free but didn't install as we are waiting for new bolts in the a.m. Heat wrapped x-over twice with header wrap (50' of 2") and painted with 3/4 of a can of ceramic heat paint, maybe she will spool up quicker once thats installed. New boost guage installed and working great now, nice and smooth both up and down to 16 psi. It appears i have a leak on the hose from the turbo to the snorkel, looked all over and couldn't find a replacement for it. Seeing's i didn't have time to take it off what is the size of that hose? Me thinks its 2/12" but i need to confirm this.
Still coming - Intake mods, getting rid of that air intake box and flattened out tube to turbo and then i'll deal with the flattened out snorkel itself.
CanadianRigger 11-24-2004, 06:36 PM Mandrel bent x-over installed, double wrapped with header heat wrap, what a difference! Also what a pain to change out, bolts were rusted in place, spent 2 hours yesterday heating them and another hour today to get them out, after that it was a piece of cake. Spools pretty quick now, gained another 1 psi on the turbo to 17 psi when in it hard for a second. I think the added pressure since the re-flash may be adding CC pressure as the CDR hoses were leaking to the turbo, oil running down the side of the block, the clamps were loose so hopefully i've cured that one. I didn't do another 0-60 yet but off the line after about 5-10' on take off the tires start to squalk a little bit and the sound since the x-over install is just to cool. Once i get the intake mods done this things gotta really take off! (oh ya, and the injectors).
