Right now my dad is out in the garage taking apart the dash of his recently aquired '99 Powerstroke F-350.

He has a very passionate hatred for door chimes and is on a search & distroy mission. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley7.gif

Anyone know the easy way (if there is one) to make the chime shut the heck up? I'm trying to save him some effort and myself the trouble of having to put half the dash back together when he gets fed up with it.

Thanks

take a screw driver and push the latch in. 2 clicks and the chime will stop. Just make sure to release it before you slam the door shut. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley18.gif

Ah, I thought the switch had to be in the latch..

Unfortunately that solution wouldn't work for my dad. He'd always forget that he'd closed the latch.

He ended up disconnecting the ground on the bottom of the steering column so there's no signal from the switch that tells when the key is out of the ignition. Hopefully that isn't going to screw up anything else..

He should be fine. It won't screw anything up.

The chime is coming from the black box under the dash, with a bunch of wires entering a plug. What I did, to disable permanently the door chime, but leave the lights on chime, was to identify the pins that were for the door chime, and bend them out of the way. Result, no chime when the door opens, but chime when it needs to. On my '96 the outer two pins of the top row of the plug were bent over, to make no contact with the socket - it took 5 minutes.

my ranger had a single key wire that tells the chime the key is in the ignition. i unplugged the connector and it only dings with the headlights on and door open.
