: difficult shifting between hi and low
moss022 11-18-2004, 10:42 PM anyone have any problems like this. press the button and it flashes for a while and then goes back to where it was. was having more trouble going back to hi but now its just as bad both ways. i have tried not moving and just moving slightly. its getting annoying, need help, whats wrong with it? http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley19.gif it used to be better, now its taking a turn for the worse.
jpekarek 11-19-2004, 12:38 AM Pretty normal. I had a '99 and an '01 that had the same problems, gets worse with time. Many of them have the same problem, the button panel contacts corrode inside. Go to the dealer and tell them you need a new 4WD button assm. It will cost about $60. Easy to install. The dash bezel should just pull off then you can unscrew the button plate. It should come out and you can carefully unplug the large connector in the back. Plug in the new one and replace everything.
Last hunting season I got stranded on the side of a mountain in a foot of snow when the buttons got really bad. I had to rip the dash apart and cut the connector off with my skinning knife, I then twisted wires together until it popped into 4WD. Almost didn't get out. After replacing the button panel, it worked like new!
My '05 I ordered with a 4WD shifter on the floor.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley1.gifEdited by: jpekarek
moss022 11-19-2004, 02:07 PM i can here the little motor on the transfer case tryin to shift but it wont. still the same problem??
SpoolinTurbo 11-19-2004, 04:20 PM maybe it's bound up when you're trying to shift? put 'er in neutral and let off the brake so it can have the slack it might need?
moss022 11-19-2004, 07:07 PM thats what i thought as well but i will go from rev. to drive and still the same thing. i had an old body style 2000 chevy that i had unpluged the wires out of the front end so i could put it in low and not have the front end engage. it worked great, http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif but i had the shifter on the floor. now with the newer truck i have the push button and tried the same thing and it would not go back to hi at all. jacked up the front and spun the tires back and forth and nothing. after it cooled down it took awhile but it finally went. since then it happens kinda in spurts. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley5.gif
akdiesel 11-19-2004, 09:00 PM I that you could have the option to be able to shift manually and still have all the other bells and whistles.
It sounds like you use your hi and low ranges alot more than the average joe. Have you checked your level in the case yet? If it is getting hot you may be low or need to change the oil out.
moss022 11-21-2004, 12:05 PM i have been pulling some big wagons for the local farmer. which sometimes i need low gear. thats where i have been getting the problems.
marcdeluca 11-21-2004, 12:50 PM The servo on the front diff gives alot of trouble. That might be what's going on. It is a thermal device that moves the shift fork to engage the axles.
akdiesel 11-21-2004, 06:52 PM But he states that it is makeing noise as if it is trying to engage but somthing is binding it up. I would think if it is the servo and not working then their would be no power going to the motor to engage it. Am I correct on this?
moss022 11-21-2004, 07:09 PM i can hear it is trying a couple of times and then stops and lights up the light on the push buttons from where it was at. i dont think its coming from the front, i am sure its coming from the transfercase. but have not looked yet, can do that!
Frank Blum 11-21-2004, 11:00 PM Are you moving or in gear when trying to shift in and out of low range? I do not believe my truck has a thermal solenoid switch like the previous ones. This one shifts instantly. Later! Frank
cwq21 11-22-2004, 10:56 AM I have to put mine in neutral and then push the selector button. It will still take just a few seconds to engage. The only problem I have is when I use it on wet roads or things like that, within a few days when I start it and the red light will be flashing and I have to go to neutral and press 2WD and its fine after that.
moss022 11-22-2004, 06:46 PM i have tried it not moving and moving, i have tried eveything. its like women, picky! but once it goes shes in, no problems, just getting it to go from hi to low or visa versa.
dale25 11-22-2004, 11:04 PM We are seeing more encoder motor and encoder motor sensor problems than anything else. The switches would be the next most likely thing.
