I filled in a waist of space (IMO) I made a cutout from Plexiglas glass, and painted the back of it black for a reflective finish.

What do you think?

Looks good. I was going to do the exact same thing, but then decided to fill another waste of space with this:

I didn't take pictures of the install, I should have. I didn't think it was going to turn out so well.

I drilled the holes about 1/64" smaller than the gauges, that way they fit in nice and tight. I just used very thin two-way tape to hold the Plexiglas on. I had to cut out the back of the console and enlarge it in diameter so the gauges could slide in, but you don't see that because the Plexiglas covers it up. I also drilled out the holes for the auxiliary outlet and cigarette outlet a little smaller that way it made for tight fit, which helps keep the Plexiglas in place.

I was going to buy a mount like yours for that finished look, but decided to take up the challenge and build my own. I like the location because it doesn't stand out like a pillar does, and I don't have turn my head to see them, just glance to the right, no different than looking at the nav unit.

Yeah, I really like the look of yours. I actually did take the challenge to a point. There was a pocket in place there, so I cut it out and got ahold of a factory plastic cover that comes on the trucks with less options. I then fitted it for my gauges/switches and popped it in place. I still want the custom billet one, but I'm a cheap ass!

Man, that plexiglass looks awesome. Im definitley going to mount my gauges there. Im tired of the A pillar mounts i had on my old truck, sometimes i'd hit my head on them:mad: . do you find they are easy to look at there while driving?------------ Also what do you use to cut out the plexiglass?

It’s very easy to look at! I used a radial arm saw to cut the dimensions, and then I use a belt and disk sender to round the edges . I used a drum sander to finesse the gauge holes and auxiliary holes.

It took a while before I had perfect fit, small increments at time.

If I had to make another, I would just use mine as a template.

My initial plan was to use a piece of oak and stain it, I started but didn't finish. I cut out a block of oak; I formed the outside of the block to the same dimensions of the console. The oak block then fit in so that the face of it was flush with the outer edges of the console. I then cutout my holes for the gauges, but I was left only with 1/16 of an inch from the top of the block to where the outer edge of the gauge holes were. When I pressed the gauges into the holes, the block split in half. I'm glad no one was around because I lost it! That's when I decided to use the Plexiglas. Plexiglas is a lot more flexible.
