First off THANK YOU ALL for a great sight and saving me a ton of money. My 95 1 ton dually was chugging and not ruunning and finally would not start. Of course the the mechanic said I needed a new pump. I bought a cheap PMD off ebay to use as a tester and to just get my pickup home ( 20 Miles ). I just plugger it in and wire tied it to the intake ( Not a great plan I know) . I made it 18 miles no problems. Then it took off like a rocket ( Twice ) then died. The PMD was smokin hot and it won't start again. My questions are did it get so hot because I didn't have it mounted or could I have something else making it get hot ?
THANKS

Because it was not mounted. -> No heat sink, the pump has cool fuel flowing through it which would cool the PMD and the pump would also act as a heat sink.
It preferred to get the PMD / FSD out of the engine bay so it does not suffer from heat soak.

Welcome.
PMD creates its own heat and if not on some kind of heat sink, it will self destruct very quickly. That and the fact that it was a used unknown PMD already, I can certainly see it not lasting 18miles.

I'm gonna save you another ton of money.
Your pmd is done for. dead. toast. I hope you didn't pay much for it.
Go to www.heathdiesel.com and order a PMD Isolator for your truck. It's not all that cheap, but it has a 7-yr replacement warranty, and nobody I know has seen a dead one.
You just bought a nice truck; do this and you're set for 7 years.
Or you could buy another one off ebay... maybe you'll get 20 miles next time.
THANKS Guys,
I just bought the cheap one ( $80 ) to make sure that was the problem and not the pump and to get the truck home. Accomplished what I wanted now I will get a good one. I have read enough on here to know it would NOT last very long but just wanted to make sure I didn't have another problem that might fry a good one.
