My mechanic said he has used Royal Purple in his Duramax and Allison Transmission for many years. Outside of the cost has anyone had any problems with RP?

I've run it in the past and it did good. But I've switched to Chevron Delo 400 5W40 full synthetic and my UOA has been even better.

I believe RP's primary base stock component is a Group IV "ester" synthetic oil vs the group IV PAO synthetic base stock used in AMSOIL and M1 TDT (or D1). Other "synthetics" like Rotella 5w40 use Group 3 "hydrocracked" mineral oil (not "true" syhthetics). IMHO, unless you need a 5w40 for winter operation, DELO 400 15w40 is one of the best choices. Some of the best Duramax UOA's posted over on the BITOG Diesel UOA forum are with DELO 400 .. However, there is also some concern about reduced ZDP levels with the new CJ-4 version as well as with all CJ-4 rated oils ...

step 1. go to tool box get tape measure.
step 2. get formentioned piece of string.
step 3. pull string straight.
step 4. measure string.
step 5. make a sticky and post results of your string. this way everyone can see how long the string is and not have to start a new thread to find out.

Yes ... thanks for the correction .. Esters are group V synthetics (not Group IV) .. I've never used Royal Purple but as you said it has a high ester content which is what sets it apart form other synthetics .. also why it's more expensive ..

I really tried to stay out of this conversation, but I can't.

You are correct in that Group V oils (Red Line, Motul, Neo) use esters as their base stock. The part that is wrong is classifying RP as a Group V. It ain't a Group V. To be honest with you, RP has produced more piss poor UOA's than I've ever seen in a motor oil (as verifed by the UOA sections at Bob is the Oil Guy).

I will say that RP does produce good gear lubes though.

IMHO: All the oils listed are very good oils. Keeping that oil clean is my main concern. Using a Top Tier Filter along with a Single or Dual By-Pass system is very vital to long engine life.

It was almost 2 gallons ...

(Yes, that was a bit too much. But it`s going to get less over time anyway, somehow, eventually ...)

Where can you buy the Chevron Delo 15-40? I'm in the mid west and there are no Chevron Stations, is there service stations the only place they see it.

Check into Schaeffer 5w-40 w/moly while you're researching. Then make your choice. I used delo before that good dino stuff.

Schaeffers 9000 5w-40 full synthetic......great oil at a great price. Bob The Oil Guy's web site also has some very good things to say about this oil. I get it direct from schaeffers for $19 a gallon including shipping( I buy one case...6 gallons at a time)

I guess I will throw in a vote for Mobil Delvac 15W-40 wth AC Delco filter. Although I have never used the Delo, it would be my 2nd choice if I had problems finding the Delvac.

Royal purple > we have been on it for ever even back when it was called max oil late 70s early 80s
we run it in everything > except my new Dmax , RP does not yet have a API CJ 15w 40 ! there working on it , my lmm sez to use cj or better so I do not know what to use

I can give a thousand success stories about Royal purple and not one failure also it is the only oil we found to make considerable power increase on the dyno from a simple oil change ( thats in a race engine )

As soon as RP has a api CJ 15-40 I will use it , Our shop uses Amsoil hyd oil exclusively and it is real good but I never used the engine oil except for dyno testing and it did not make the power of the RP !

what do you guys recommend for a CJ oil ? t

WHY ??

Many new vehicles come filled with syn from the factory. Changed mine over at 1500 miles. Does'nt use a drop.

Delo 15w-40 at 7300 miles on a change, Blackstone labs stated all wear particles less then normal and TBN# was 9. BJ's wholesale club sells it for 54-56.00 per case with 6 one gallon jugs the oil is excellent.
