i have been looking for a new starter motor here in south africa, can not find one.
us parts cc requested all numbers on my engine, and acording to them i have a 5.7 litre v8 diesel.
is this true, any ideas

In what vehicle? GM stopped using 5.7s in trucks after 1981. The 5.7 was designed and built by Oldsmobile and rebuilt starters are easy to get.

Would really help to know what vehicle it's in. If its in a car it is a rare 4.3 or the more available 5.7. If in a truck 1981 and older it's a 5.7. 1982 and up 6.2. Which side of the motor is the starter on? 6.2's are on the passenger side, 5.7's are on the drivers side. I would imagine the 4.3 is on the drivers side as well. Also you should be able to look under the hood just in front of the radiator at the emissions sticker. That will not only tell you the size of the motor, but the year as well.
