: Clatter from engine????

Ok here is my issue.

At idle i have a very noticable clatter comming from my engine.Give it
just a little throttle ( like 200rpms) and it goes away.At cruise it is
non existant. While stopped at stop lights or at idle people are looking
at me.In the am when its cold it does not do this untill it has warmed
up for about 5min.No noticable difference in driving or power.Stomp on
the gas and just about breaks the back tires loose.I thought it might
be the vac pump because it sounds like its comming from that direction
but hard to tell. When at idle i cannot move the wastgate arm so i think
its pulling good vac,but i dont have a guage.Take off serp. belt and no
noise.turn the ac on and it gets louder and more noticable, turn the
wheel all the way left/right and it gets louder.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley7.gif

I was told it could be the harm. balancer making this noise??How can i check that and how much are they??

Like i said other than the loud clatter at idle it runs fine.Idle is
about 800 by the way...If anybody is in the DFW area and would like to
listen to it to help me better trbl shoot that would be good too...

Thanks..

truck is a 95 td with straight pipes, and thats the only mod so far.170k

green tag pump, new pmd and cooler.

Look real close at the crank pulley and harmonic, as well as tensioner pulleys and the pulleys on the belt drive. These parts wear out and can cause engine failurer if left unchecked.

That idle is 200 rpm high. Make sure the CTS in the water crossover is attached to it's connector and giving an ohm reading that corresponds with the engine temp. Edited by: quantum mechanic

CRAAAAAP

I dont like that failure word....I will check those items tomorrow
night.Any idea on how much a harm bal, crank pulley costs?????

Also what am i exactly looking for?

Thanks for the quick reply...

Look for urethane extruding form the harmonic.

http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/uploads/quantummechanic/2004-11-17_203032_harmonic.jpg

The black part stickin out means it's dying. pn#18154688 if I read the numbers right. $67 on www.gmpartsdirect.com (http://www.gmpartsdirect.com)

The crank pulley will have slack in it and cracked urathane center. Watch it with the engine idling, for vibration. Costs more than the harmonic.

I called around to auto parts stores and Oreilly's has it for $50 in
stock.I asked if it was for my engine code s and he said it shows
engine code F but that in his crossreference screen it shows that it
cross references with gm part# 10154688 which is what mine is.How
different are the balancers between the F engine and the S engine?I
wouldnt think it would be a difference.since it has been having this
clacking sound for almost 2 months now i would liek to get it fixed
asap, now that i think i know what is causing it, before the engine says

When the rubber falls out it's already slipping and that means the crank and the belt are moving at different speeds.

Did you get a look at the rubber on the harmonic?

That is the EXACT part and brand I bought...Thats the part that has the
nice chunk missing from it.I can lay under neath and turn the pulley by
hand about 2in wither direction untill the bolts catch it.I thought the
big piece behind that was the harmonic balancer.I looked at that piece
and couldnt see anything wrong with it.Paid 64.96 out the door at
O'reilly's auto parts here in fort worth.I'll be switching it out
tonight..

In my previous post i stated that i ordered a harmonic balancer, but
like i said what i got when it came in was what is hown above. It was
supposed to come in this morning but they got it last night.Do i need a

Do you just unbolt it from underneath the truck?

quantum mechanic
11-19-2004, 12:46 PM
I usally take the shroud and fan off, not too many bolts 10mm shroud and 13mm on the fan. then use a breaker and a 15mm on the 4 crank pulley bolts. Then, if you care to remove the harmonic you can attach a puller.

Juancho
11-19-2004, 01:39 PM
What are the torque numbers for the pully? I am wondering it worn out pulleys going unchecked, is what is causing all the broken cranks? In other words. if you were to stay on top of the pully and hamonic balancer, I bet your crank would last 300k miles easily. I will check mine this afternoon for sure.

I know it's a little late, but Fluidampr is supposed to have one of their balancers for the 6.5 application by end of this month or next. I am guessing, based on their current product line, that pricing will be around $300-$400.

my advice.....you get what you pay for.....spend the extra money and get the balancer and pulley from the stealer. thats what i did. also when your changing is a good time to pull and clean radiator and put a new front main seal in.

Just as a point of reference, the Harmonic Balancer that was pictured previously is not really the balancer, rather it is the pulley drive. Pulley drive is elastomer and bearing equipped so that the rapid momentary changes in crankshaft speed associated with high compression Diesel combustion are not transferred to the belt-driven accessories.

The real harmonic balancer is behind the pulley drive and is bolted to the crank. It's also a great idea to check the elastomer in this to see if it's extruding or if the inertia ring (outside ring) has slipped. It's this [larger] balancer that dampens crankshaft movement and would be responsible for the crankshaft breakage issue. I only know this deal as well as I do 'cause I was the Dir of Engineering at Dorman when they came out with this replacement part.

Does anybody have (or know where to find) a good picture of this part as it sits on the engine? If possible, point out the rubber that we're supposed to be looking for that signifies a dying balancer (or pulley?).

This is the harmonic looking from the oilpan forward toward the front of the truck. the black rubber oozing out is the failure.

The crank pulley is where the belt goes around the lowest pulley on the block.

Don't have any pictures yet, too wet still, But if you lay under the front of the engine and look up at the lower pulley that the belt goes on you should be able to see the back side of the pulley is rubber mounted. Thats where my was cracked all the way around the center hub. also get a small mirror and look at the front center section of the pulley and you should see the 4 spokes, and 4 bolts flanges. I could see where mine had been hitting against each other and left shiney marks. If either of these conditions or found or rubber chucks are found missing then replacement is needed. Hope that helps for now till someone gets pictures posted, which I will do went I change mine out.:ro)

Installed it till I get to store to buy one and WOW this truck is quite. When I bought it everyone told me how quite it was for a diesel and lately everyone else was telling me how loud it was. Guess I didn't pick up on it getting louder, but you sure can tell now. THANKS EVERYONE now what else is wrong with my truck that I haven't found yet cause ya ain't talked about it lately. LOL
