: Help me make sense of available tuners
skoryaro2 11-17-2004, 03:16 PM Hello,
......I know I will be pleased with the power and performance. This truck
will basically be the second family vehicle and my daily commute
vehicle 50 miles per day - 20K per year. I plan on keeping it stock. I
do frequent light towing of 2500 lbs or less and a rare heavy haul (but
who knows what the future brings)...........
Well, you guys really did it to me!! The above quote is an edited
quote from my first post on this forum when I proclaimed that I would
be "keeping it stock!"
Now, after I've installed my Nasta nerf's, a new bed cap, bedliner and mudflaps I find myself searching for a tuner!!
I've done lots of searching and reading on this forum on tuners but
it's hard to get a good picture of what's available and for what?
I'm just interested in a simple mostly trouble-free tuner that will
boost the HP and torque a little but basically stay within the stock
Allison parameters. Would like a simple install / removal. Are
in-cab monitors pretty much the norm? Do the monitors gather data from
the ECM / PCM to display it in place of having gauges? Can you change
settings "on the fly" with most tuners? Could someone just paraphrase
the difference in the available tuners? What's available for my
'05 now and what's due to come out in the near future?
Thanks for any effort and....
P.S. - My wife hates you guys!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/hihi.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/hihi.gif
Got Juice? 11-17-2004, 04:19 PM The best overall IMHO for adjustability and ease of use, gauges included and trans protection would be The Edge Juice and Attitude monitor.
The 6 Gun Works well from all reports as well.
Lloyd-TX 11-17-2004, 06:27 PM Ditto what skoryaro2 said! Much confusion in MY mind concerning LLY performance enhancers.
My wants (needs?): less turbo "lag", more available torque, better fuel
economy, adjust for my larger diameter tires, and eliminate the top
speed limiter.
Wassup?
fredw 11-17-2004, 06:37 PM set up a freind the last week with a power pup for his lly, his wants were what your wants are, talked to him today, he said in the 90hp mode the truck is wild, regular cab, but said he thinks his mileage is better, and more response, also did the last two of your requestshttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley3.gif

Thanks for rolling the Predator, now when is Eric going to upgrade your trans so u can test some stacks for us?
Wonder how a Predator&J/A stack would do.
BUCKSHOTjr 11-18-2004, 07:26 AM I have the Quad. I keep it set on the 90HP and Love it! I am planning on a Juice one day, but to kill my wants and to have one that I can put back stock real quick and to have NOW. Oh and also burn a little rubber, really to get rid of the 245's. The Diablo Predator was one of my choices but found out that once you put it in your truck it is that trucks programmer. You could not sell it later if you wanted to try something else. That is what turned me away from it. The Quadzilla that I have is the 135. Just go on what you feel is right. I asked a few that has the Duramax and went off what that said about their programmers. Good Luck Edited by: BUCKSHOTjr
skoryaro2 11-18-2004, 09:50 AM Thanks for the responses - good to know I'm not the only one
confused. I understand that the Edge "Juice" is the programmer
and the "Attitude" is the monitor but......
#1) Do other programmers have the same type of monitor available as the Edge does?
#2) The monitors act as "gauges", if you will. Do you have to
install additional probes or does it collect all data from the computer?
#3) If you don't get the monitor - how do you change the power settings?
#4) It seems that people keep making mention that they are
waiting for the '05 lly programmers. Does that mean that they are
not available yet for the '05's??
Thanks!
Rob
sprintmod1 11-18-2004, 01:29 PM #1--No; Edge is the only one with a remote control/monitor.
#2--Correct; the Edge's Attitude Monitor provides the read outs like a guage would; Yes, you do need to install the "probes" In the DYI section there is the "HOOT" Method for installing the probes which is very detailed and accurate. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley32.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley32.gif
#3--Power settings are changed with a combination of key on/off and gear shifts and gas pedal sequences. Works quite easily. I have Standard Edge (bought used from member here) with standard Isspro gauges (from Kennedy).
#4--Not sure; I believe they are starting to trickle out now.

david b 11-18-2004, 03:33 PM I haven't seen any comments on: Increased air Ie. k&N or AFE Filter ...2. larger than stock exhaust to help with EGT'S...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley5.gif It was my opinion that before you start increasing the Hp that you would want to do the above 1st???? http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley9.gifThen you would be more prepared for the juice with attitude....http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley17.gif or what ever program you choose.. I finally got the Juice / Attitude Installation Instructions to
download from their website - ANSWERED ALOT OF MY QUESTIONS!!
I'm leaning towards the Juice W/O the Attitude.
I've read several times on this forum that the stock
Allison can handle an increase of about 90 HP more. Is it safe to
assume that WHEN NOT TOWING you could drive in level 4 (90 HP
increase) with a stock tranny and not do harm if you don't
get too carried away?
According to the Edge instructions - increased air flow and larger
exhaust is not needed if you watch the EGT's and stay out of the level
3,4&5 while towing? Any thoughts??

Ok Guys, I am really confused. I have an 04 Duramax HD LLY, and originally purchased an edge juice with attitude this spring. Performance was only about half of that of my 02 LB7 with Diablo predator. Most of the problem was at low end where it remained a complete dog. I was mopped up by the new Ford, from top to bottom. After hundreds of calls to technical assistance, I gave up and got rid of it.
Since then, I have called Kennedy and two others, and they say Edge is the way to go. What should I get? Predator? TTS? BULLY DOG? Please advise, and pardon my grammatical errors.

sprintmod1 11-19-2004, 09:54 AM Dmax Tim--ok I sit corrected on that one; since I purchased the Juice, I have not very closely followed what the others have done.
One thing nice about the juice without attitude is that there is no real clue to the service guys that you are running a box. Just pull the juice out and you can tell them "I just like to keep an eye on things"http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif
I pull a trailer a lot of miles, keep an eye on EGT and do have to lift on some hills to get them down, there will be a MBRP exhaust on by spring to help that out.
Intake is a whole different story; I would suggest looking at the air filter study done here by Spicer; I am leaving my air box in stock form (jmo).
I daily drive in level 2 and have tried 3 once or twice but was having trouble keeping the tires under it around corners and stop signs. Been using Level 1 for all my towing since I got it. You do have to keep an eye on the EGT's though but we are always hammer down to get to the track and have hills to get over too. Do definitely have to lift to get them down with out the 4" exhaust.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley19.gif
Kennedy 11-19-2004, 10:24 AM Could one of the Moderators fix this thread? I believe that it is related to the font size used by tromplaw I've had the same problems with PM's using this font size, and no ability to scroll right.
skoryaro2 11-19-2004, 11:25 AM Thanks for the responses - If I got this right, Edge and Banks are
about the only ones making a tuner that you can adjust "on the fly"
(need the additional Attitude or Six-gun in order to do this).
Others such as the Bully Dog and Diablo Predator are programers that
basically "reflash" your computer via the OBDII. If, for some
reason, the dealer re-flashes your computer - than you will need to
re-flash it again if using the "flash-tuners" (the Edge & Banks
will still be OK). A benefit of the "flash-tuners" though would
be that most of them will also scan & clear codes, but the Edge
will not.
Did I get it right??
Kennedy 11-19-2004, 05:08 PM Flash tuners have benefits as do the modules. Flash tuners do not rely on hardware for day to day operation, and can correct speedo and increase top speed limit.
With the Predator, your OEM tune is stored and can be redone any time. You can also return to stock prior to a visit to the dealer, AND resave the new updated files if the dealer applies them.
D-Maxx 11-19-2004, 06:02 PM Thanks for the thread, I have been wondering the same things myself. I think I will be going with the Predator since I will be changing tire sizes and I want to be able the check codes as/if they pop up. But I imagine I will always be running the 85hp tune, I drive a little "aggressively" will I have any tranny problems? How about towing 2000lbs with the 85 tune?<?:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
skoryaro2 11-19-2004, 07:20 PM FYI - Kennedy's web site has a good write-up on power -tuners here: http://www.kennedydiesel.com/ (http://)
Slow4door 11-29-2004, 08:12 PM I have a PPE unit for the LLY which works wonderful. It is a flash type with 3 settings. 130/260 being the highest. I normally run in the tow mode. Been very happy with so far. Thinkn about sending in for an upgrade to 180/380. I hope this sheds some light on your subject. Has anyone else had any good/bad reviews on PPE?
