Way back when the "EGR unplug mod" thread was first born, someone
posted that their dealer told him that to clear the EGR fault codes
from the computer without a scanner all you had to do was disconnect
the negative battery cables momentarily.

Can anyone tell me if this is true?? Would save me a trip to Auto Zonehttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley1.gif

Maybe someone with a scanner or Tech II could actually do a quick test to see if this method workshttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif

Thanks!

Rob

Scan it for free at the auto parts store and clear the codes there
- for free.

With the Dodge trucks you can disconnect both batteries, both cables. Then hold the positive and negative cable together off one of the batteries for 10 seconds. This will completly drain the system and clear any codes that it may have. It should work the same with a Duramax.

as posted above..autozone will scan and/or delete codes for FREE. Not sure if you have those up there, but most auto parts places will do it for free.

I know some of the programers / tuners will also do it - will the Edge do it?

So curiousity got the better of me today. I plugged my EGR back in and went to my local Auto Zone to have them check what codes were thrown. Well, all 3 guys behind the counter asked if my SES light was on? I said no but I know I have codes that were thrown because I "accidentally" ran the truck with the EGR unplugged. They said their scanner will not read a code unless the SES light is on. When I asked about clearing any codes they acted as though I had asked them to commit murder "It's against our corporate policy now to clear any codes - we could get into HUGE trouble for doing that!"

Guess they'll eventually clear after 50 ignition cycles (or I get a power tuner).

FYI

I bought an Innova code scanner to read & delete codes at local Kragen Auto store for 100 bucks to go with my Edge tuner.

Some scanners will not read or clear some Duramax specific codes. Do your homework. I spent $300 on the best Actron the local auto parts store had only to find out it will not read injector voltage codes, or low fuel pressure codes, and probably more I haven't seen yet.

Don’t ask THEM to clear the codes, do it yourself. I went in and asked to use the scanner at the parts store the guy took my license and handed me the scanner - I walked to the truck pulled the codes ( with NO lights showing) read the codes, then the scanner had a button that said “clear codes?” - I pushed the button and returned scanner, got my license and I was on my way. Whole process took like 5 minutes.

Called another Auto Zone - they said their scanner would probably read it - no problem clearing any codes either. I'll give them a try on the way home tonight.

My Snap-On scanner will show and clear all codes, but won't turn off the MIL. It may be because the scanner has an '01 module and truck is '04. I have to tell it the wrong year, otherwise I can only scan in generic OBDII mode.

Well they checked it no problem. Showed no codes. Don't know if they were unable to read them or I already deleted them because of the 50 ignition cycles I did the other day. Will unplug it again and have it checked again after driving it for awhile.

What is a good scanner to get that will read all the codes and clear them for say a 04 or 05 ?
