Anybody send their oil out fo analysis? I know I have my boat oil sent out by a mechanic every 3 years for safety purposes (breaking down 100 miles of the coast in rough seas is no fun, believe me!). Anybody think it's worth it in a truck to determine potential current/future problems?

Iwould send it out. Sending mine out on the next oil change (15K) and the oil will have 5K on it.

I have mine done for that exact reason, simply put, I want to know
whats going on in there and if there are any trends (ie problems)
developing. I use to change the oil every 3000 miles but it turned out
I was able to double that to every 6000 miles. I was just wasting time
and money with premature oil changes. Because there are so many
different variables that determine engine wear, it's a good way to see
what's best for your particular situation. I look at it this way, for
the small cost of an oil anaylsis, it could prevent small issues from
becoming large expensive problems.

Oh yeah almost forgot, it gives me something else to chart on an Excel spreadsheethttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/hihi.gif

tcmax hits it pretty good. We do a lot of talk on oil 2-3 times oil changes dinos vs. syn etc.

In a recent heavy duty trucking article the expert spoke of the fact that the last thing he talks about is drain intervals when it comes to oil analysis. The real value being in finding and fixing problems before they turn into major ones.
