Hi,

anyone running the General Grabber AT2's? I wonder if should give them a try when getting a new set, but I couldn't find any useful info on them.

I've got 12.5X35X16.5 General MT on the wife's H2, real good tires and the price was great.

I run equal in them for balance.

They look like a decent tread, if they had something in a 17", I'd put them on my truck.

Thanks for your input :) MTs wouldn't be a good choice for my application, but any suggestions are appreciated.

The Grabbers are about the same price as the BFGs here ...

Unless I'd just get a new set of the cheaper Colways I'm currently running, that's a hard decision. I'm quite tempted to try another brand of tires, and I like the looks of the Grabbers better than the BFGs. And the Colways look exactly like the BFGs, they actually have the same tread.

The Colways are good tires, but the flanks seem to be a bit soft. I compensate for that by running them at 105 PSI, but that forces me to check the tire pressure annoyingly often. That's the main reason why I'd like to try something else.

Everybody says that the BFGs are great.

Grabber AT 2's seem to be unknown.

Any suggestions? :)

I 'm running the General All terrains (285/75/16) and lovin them http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/hihi.gif. They last alot longer than BFG's and are are alot cheaper. When i went tire shopping a few weeks ago, i found that the BFGs were $175/tire and i got the Generals for $113 / tire. I know a few guys that had these tires and thay said with normal tire rotation and balancing they got almost 60k miles out of there tires. Also i went to Sears automotive for the tires, i found they were the cheapest.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley1.gif

Good Luck!

They're the grabbers, but to be honest with you i'm not too sure wether there the at 2's. Anyhow, Generals are an all around good tire for on road and off-road.

Update:

I've got a set of General Grabber AT2s (265/75/16) last week, and I'm very pleased with them. I've been driving them for about 1000kms now on dry and slightly wet and salted roads. They are running very smoothly and surprisingly quiet and grip very well.

My previous tires had the same threads the BFGs have, and my impression is that the threads of the Generals is even better, both on and off the road. The Generals run much more quiet, and the threads don't seem to get clogged with mud so much.

Because the old ones were recycled ones, they are not exactly comparable, though. They were much softer, so the new ones are already a great improvement only by that.

Hm, I tried to attach a picture, I hope it'll be visible ...

I am running the General All Terrains (265/75r16). Bought them from Sears for $104 a piece. Have 11k on them, barely any sign of wear.

I always wanted to try Generals but the low price sort of scared me off. Next time I'm going with the generals. Good post.

PS, it is quite hard to find an 265 in load range E. All of the BFG's I looked at were D. My only choices were Firestone, Dunlop, and General.

Mine are load range E rated for 3410 lbs. :)

So everyone knows, been trying to get a set of General All Terrains 265/75/16E from Sears for about a month. They had to order them and after a few weeks, they told me that after contacting General/Continental tire that Sears wont be carrying that tire anymore. So...
-Anyone know the difference between General All Terrains and the Grabber AT2? (besides the $70 price difference)
--Whats everyones opinions on another brand of all terrain tire? Heard BFG is oly 40K load range c compaired to General's 50K load range E
At the moment will try to shoot for AT2 from sears on special order.

I've been running BFG AT KO 265's since '98 on all my 4x4s. Nothing but the best of luck, never a blowout. The 265's are load range D which gives you a higher load rating than the stock load range E 245's. I only get about 40k miles out of a set, then give them to a less fortunate buddy who runs them another 30k miles (until BALD) and he has never had a problem either (82 Ford Diesel 4x4). I keep newer tires because my truck sees mud and heavy towing on a regular basis. I had General AT's 245 85r16 load range E on my 5er (15,300lbs). After 2 blowouts I now run Bridgestone's on the trailer, no problems so far. And no, the Generals weren't overloaded at 2815lbs on each tire per the scales.

I have the AT2's, been running them for about 15k miles now. I love em, just wish the came in a bigger size. The 265's ARE on National backorder(per my local sears guy) but they always have plenty of the 285's that I am running now.
I might have to see if I can squeeze them on the wifes Tahoe, since they will be coming off in a couple days to put the 315's on my truck.

You do realize that Bridgestone=Firestone, the tires with the WORST reputation for blowouts.

BTW, I have 25k on my Generals and still like them. Hardly any sign of wear (I am comparing to the brand new spare I bought with tires).

Yes I do. These perticular Bridgestones were not my first choice by any means. The 245-85-r16 tire size is kinda hard to come by, being so tall. The man at the tire shop swore up and down these were some of his best tires, most expensive also but what the hell insurance is paying for them. They have got to be better than the Generals I had on there. Time will tell.

Thats funny, since after 2 weeks of my sears guy waiting for my tires, he called the company and they told him that tires was on national backorder for an unknown amount of time.
I think i will contact my next closest sotre and see what they have in stock.

Do these have a 3-ply side wall like the BFG's? Two ply side wall tires seem to float all over the road.

Thanks!:)

Well, I don't know how many plys the side walls have, but they do not seem to float on mine. My previous tires were floating very much, but the Generals give a much more stable and comfortable ride and thus make for a great improvement in driveability. I'm still very happy with them, they were a good choice.

The only thing is that the alignment of the front wheels is not as it should, thus the front tires wear on their inner sides. But the tires cannot be blamed for that, it's just the alignment.

My truck weighs almost 2700kg --- if yours is heavier, YMMV.

BFG Rugged trail T/A 265s come with an E rating. My friend's '04.5 cummins came with them, the tread doesn't look like the web pics on BFG site. Decent tire.

Lee, where and for how much did you get the general AT2's?
Sounds like you like them so far. I was just going to go for the all terrians, but with Sears not being able to suplly them, I guess I will foot the bill and get th AT2's instead, pratically the same tire as far as I can figure.

Looked at the website. doesnt say what ply the tire has. I imagine with it being load range E is would b 3 ply? just a guess.

Although, i dont know much about plys honestly. Only what it means. somewhere else on the board I found this, but dont hold me to it.
"10ply is an E rated tire, 8ply is D rated, 6 ply is C rated"

I've got them from a local dealer who managed to order them for me after I somewhat insisted on getting that particular tires. Nobody keeps such tires on stock here, and it takes only one or two days until they arrive, anyway. They cost almost EUR 150 here (including balanching and mounting).

The cheapest ATs I can get are recycled ones from Colway which cost EUR 92. I've had a set of them just before I got the Generals. Of course, it won't be fair to compare cheap recycled tires to expensive new ones, but I'd say that the Generals are very well worth their money.

The Colways have the same thread the BFGs have, and I'd say that the thread of the Generals is even better. It's less noisy, drains water better and better cleans off of mud because the gaps are a bit wider.

General has ATs and AT-2s --- be sure to get the AT-2s. The AT-2s are fairly new, the ATs are the older ones and have totally different threads. Hmm, it seems that the old ATs don't appear on their website anymore.

Lee thanks for the info. I keep on reading about everyone wants decent tread BFG's in 265/75/16E but they dont have them. True, the All Terrain model dont have that, but anyone have or check out the BFG Commercial T/A Traction model? Seems they have, or will have very soon a 265/75/R16E because its listed on the site. MSPN# 53176 Stock #404-169 Max load single-3415@80psi dual-3085@80psi. Tread looks pretty good. I dont know the price but I will try to see if I can order them today. Before I knew that size was available, or will be, I checked into the same tire but as a 245/75/16E and price was $133. Hope it wont be much different then that. Anyone know anything about this tire?

BFG contacted me today, said the Commercial Traction 265/75/16E is due to come out October 2005. A bit too late for me, kinda need new tires now so stuck with 245's in the same tire I guess. Compaired them to All Terrains on their site, they turn out better in my opinion. Local wholesale club has them at $104.
Thought I would let everyone know, expect another on the market.
Does anyone know anything about the commerical traction tire? Likes/dislikes/anything.
