Ok, this is probably a dumb question, but I'll ask anyway... I have always assumed one has to drain the motor oil prior to changing out the filter.

The only reason I ask is because if I were to suddenly start using synthetic motor oil, I would still need to change the filter at 3K/5K miles but I might want to re-use the oil possibly. I assumed I would have to drain the oil, replace the filter, then replace the oil.

I was thinking it seems like the filter mount may be up high enough to allow the filter to be changed w/o draining the oil? Anyone know if this is possible or not? Just wondering...

Thanks,

Tim

No need to drain the oil first. Just spin off the old filter, spin on the new one and then add enough oil to make up what was lost with the filter.

Thanks for the info, I had no idea.

Is it really necessary to change the filter at the same milage as
mineral oil? Someone else here suggested the filter would go as
long as the oil would.

I am putting synthetic in. Plan on running 16,000 KLMs (10,000 miles) on oil and filter (Baldwin)

Any thoughts?

Max Owner:

I just changed oil & Filter @ 9200 miles. I cut open the filter. It was really dirty and I am not to sure how severly that restricted the oil flow.

I decided I am going to change filters every 4500 miles if I stick to the 9000 mile oil changes.

Amsoil recommends changing the filter at 7000 miles. And the 15W-40 25,0000 miles or 1 year. Any longer than that requires analysis of the oil.

Suppose for all it takes to do a filter, can't hurt. Not really
interested in climbing under the truck, through the winter, but.....
