: Steering Shaft "clunk" vs. "rattle"

Taking my rig in next week for "the" steering shaft problem and want to get a better feel for what to expect the stealer to say in response to my description. I've seen the tsb's on a steering shaft "clunk" and the "rattle at low speed parking manuvers". I think I have the rattle, 'cause the shaft does in fact make a recipricating noise during low speed turns, over cobblestones (stamped concrete), etc. that I can hear quite well in the cab; it doesn't matter if I'm cranked all the way over or not. I would describe the "clunk" as a one-time noise that happens when turning the wheel to specific points, like something was binding up then releasing (hence the need to lube the shaft).

Agree? Disagree?

thanks!

I've got the same thing in mine, going to take it in next week.Had it in for tailgate straps last week and the dealer said to bring it in and leave it when I could.

Couple days eh? sounds like I'd better call the SM and let him know I'm coming in next week!

EDIT: just called the stealer to setup a test drive and once I described the problem he said that a test drive wasn't necessary--it's the intermediate steering shaft and they've been replacing a bunch of them. AND... of course he says they're on back order and doesn't know when they'll get them, but of course you have to take your truck in first so they can verify it, then they order the part.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley7.gifEdited by: donmiller714
