: Lets Compare Fuel Knock Noise

I'm going nuts trying to determine what's a normal diesel noise at his 1500 - 1800 RPM range. Is it a fuel knock or a normal diesel sound. The sound occurs light load, stronger under heavy load towing or up hills, last gear O/D.

I just started use of the Stanadyne fuel additive. No big reduction in knocking noise. It sounds just like a fuel knock/ping .

What are you guys hearing in this RPM range? Do you know what you are hearing or you just think every noise is a normal noise for a diesel? I just don't know. Been to the delaer twice, no help at all!

I have the same exact problem you have. The dealer said it was 'burst rattle'. I haven't had much luck figuring it out either. I know there are other people that have it based on posts I've seen.

As you said it sound like a fuel knock mostly from about 1500-1800 but I hear it above 1800 as well. It does not sound like the pilot injection when it cuts out over 2600. When the pilot cuts out that knock is more regular and different sounding. The knock I hear is more variable rattley knock that you have to listen for below the normal diesel noise.

It is definitely there only under load, light or heavy, and is definitely annoying when towing.

I just started using Power Service Diesel Kleen. I've gone through a couple of tanks and it seems that the knock has significantly reduced. I'm hoping in a couple more tanks it wil go away.

If it is normal I can live with it. I just want to know that its not bad and that I'm not damaging the engine.

You know, I have the samething. It sounds just like pinging if it were a gas engine. Drives me crazy!! I too have been to the dealer with no help. I have found with different brands of fuels it will change. Also each time you change brands of fuel it seems to take at least two tanks before you know if it made a difference. I just started using Stanadyne (first tank full now) and it seems to reduce the pinging alittle. I also have a fuel knock at 2700 RPM that it REALLY helped to reduce. and no its not the pilot injection shutting off. You can hear the difference when it shuts off. I have the LLY with 5800 miles on it so far. If you come across a fix please let me know!! By the way, did the dealer perform a balance test? Injector #7 was right at 3 on mine which I think is the problem with the 2700 RPM fuel knock. Not sure about the pinging though. The fuels I have tried so far are Chevron, circle K (aka 76 here in Phx) flying J truck stop and Texaco, with Texaco being the best for the pinging. What brands have you tried? Good luck

I've tried Pilot, Shell and Chevron. Have not seen that much difference in my case based on brand.

When I brought it in to the dealer they tested the injectors but didn't give me the results. Frankly I don't trust that dealer and will probably go to another. I've heard that socaldieseltech, a tech from this board people speak highly of, works at a local dealer in my area so I may take it there. I PM'd him to ask him to take a look at this thread if he gets a chance and let us know what he thinks.

I'm not sure in my case it is the injectors. I get good mileage, it runs smoothe, I have plenty of power and it doesn't smoke.

Most days, mine rattles like crazy in that RPM range. Other days it is quiet with just the normal diesel knock. It can be both quiet and noisy on the same fuel load. I run Power Service but it doesn't seem to make much difference. No smoke, good power and good mileage so I haven't taken it to the dealer. It has not been reflashed for the latest updates and has 4,000 miles.

Mine was reflashed and the flash did not seem to make any difference.

I had the reflash. Not a lot of difference.

Put in some Stanadyne. Noticed the truck started quieting down more. DId that for 2 tankfuls.

Thought I'd try Power Service. Now that thar stuff REALLY quieted the truck down.

So, my recommendation: reflash, then Power Service.

I had the same thing on Texaco "premium diesel" and BP/Amoco fuel. I switched to a local truck stop (Citgo) and haven't had a ping since. Someone wrote on another topic that Texaco's so called "premium diesel" was really just #1 diesel.

My new lly has the same noise! It sounds just like a gasser that needs a valve job. I just traded in my 01 LB7 that NEVER had these noises and sure was a lot better sounding... I am ashamed to pass a ford now :(

Took it into the Dealer. He was instructed to Compare it to other trucks on the lot, Per GM, and see if it was any worse.... The Service manager told me it was normal and he tested an 05 and it was even worse!

This sound is so annoying that I wish I had not bought the truck...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley7.gif

I've heard the noise before, Mark_my_word, but haven't really investigated it. I would be happy to take a look at your balance rates for you though. Does it sound like one cylinder is affected, or all cylinders?

I’m sorry folks, for not getting back to you sooner, I’m limited on my time on the computer. I’m just about sure this pinging or knocking is fuel related issue. You know, with these new EPA fuel emissions requirements, I will bet these guys have these engines running right on the edge. I have tried Exxon, Shell, Sunoco and guess I will hunt down a Texaco as mentioned here. I’m so disappointed in this LLY diesel. I put so much effort in researching a good HD towing diesel setup. I will not dare tell my wife of these problems or I will be packing.

I guess I will setup another dealer appointment and go from there!

Added second thought here, I just sold my 99 2500 6.0 Gas. 128,000 miles. From day one, this truck add the very same sounding knock. When towing and under load, I thought this truck was going to fly-a- part. Did the dealer thing I don’t know how many times and finally just gave up. Truck would only run on premium grade fuel and in its later years, the knock began to return until Shell reformulated its premium fuel (you know, the recently advertised new premium V10 fuel) and the knock went completely away. The best the truck ever ran then I sold it thinking I was really moving up to a very nice running truck. Life savings and all that stuff.

04 2500 HD 4X4 Ext. 3,000 miles, Tried different brands of fuels, Stansdyne one tank, re-flash, injectors tested the complete look over! Dealer Twice

Socaldieseltech,

I want to wait a couple more tanks to see how far the Power Diesel goes in quieting it down then I'll make an appointement and bring it in.

When I brought it in to the dealer they had it for a week. At the end of the first day they thought it might be an injector. The next day they said it wasn't the injector and that they got some codes and were checking them. On the third day they said it was the EGR solenoid and that it needed to be replaced. When I picked it up a couple days later they said they replaced the solenoid and that fixed the knock. I told them I was skeptical and when I pushed the service writer he showed me the 'burst rattle' PI and said that must be what the knock was. Told him I was sure it would do the same thing and I would bring it back if it did. I don't trust them so I never brought it back. This was at Classic in Anaheim.

I never asked them what the balance rates were. I should have.

Thanks, Mark
