hi, never done the fifth wheel thing, so I need some information.
I have a 2006 2500HD 6.6duramax with the 6 speed ally, and I am thinking along the lines of getting an enclosed fifth wheel car hauler 24-36' long.
What are my options for the fold away ball style hitches that install in the bed?
I am leaning towards the fifth wheel instead of tag along, because it seems as if it's just the 'proper' thing to do.
I will be towing a 3200lb race car, or two if I go with the 36'.
I haven't noticed too many single car haulers available in 'fifth wheel' configuration... why not? It seems like a better set up all the way around.

first off when you talk about length on a fifth wheel you count the total lenth of the trailer not like a tag behind where you only count the box. so a 24' fifth wheel will only be about 18-16' for a car to fit. second if you are talking about the type of hitch where a ball is mounted in your bed that would be a goose neck and there aren't mant car haulers that have that set up. the fifth wheel is like a semi with the big steel plate that not so easy to hide and a lot heavier when you want a quick disconect type to store away when not in use, but a fifth wheel is a far better way to tow (or goose neck)

I'd like to believe the reason for such few short 5th wheelers is the cost. Also when folks only need such a short trailer they get a tag because when they sell it they have more people interested in a tag over a 5th wheel. A tag would be cheaper and you could add the weight distribution hitch. Also with such a short trailer many don't see the benefits of going 5th wheel because the load isn't very heavy. I tow a enclosed vnose 30' and have a pair or 6k axles and will reach 10k to 12k in weight and don't have any issues with control of the vehicle due to the weight. If you get a 5th wheel, spend the money and get a pair of 6k axles, don't bother with the triple axles with less weight capacity. You will get 10 ply tires, 8 lug rims, and larger hubs. If the trailer gets to be longer then add the 3rd 6k axle.

thanks, that makes a lot of sense. It just seems like it would be the best way to go, and money isn't an issue for me... but I guess the resale arguement probably holds a lot of truth.
I was actually mistaken, I meant gooseneck, not fifth wheel.
Thanks for the replies, I need all the towing education that I can get!

Check your weights. GVWR and GCWR. If you get a 5th wheel, be very careful with the pin weight. Your truck can tow a house, but is weak on the ability to carry heavy pin weights. The max you can carry is on the sticker on the rear door pillar.

For a goose hitch you can't much better than a B&W, thry also make a 5er hitch attachment to go into the frame mounted part.

Yes, this is a good thing you need to remember. Your floor space on even a 36' 5th wheel isn't going to be enough to fit 2 cars unless they are Mini Poopers which wouldn't be weighing 3200lbs. -Mat-
