: PMD relocation : where?
matuva 08-30-2007, 05:06 PM Hi all.
wenesday this week I experienced PMD failure. Luckely for me, the truck stalled 3 times in the afternoon, and each time I was driving low speed, so I was able to stop and park safely.
Can't tell you what I was saying at the moment...Censored
I have a SSDiesel relocation kit (the one wich bolts on the side of intake manifold) under the hand and I installed it : the truck fired right away and runs fine still. So, we may consider I'm OK.
For now sure. But by browsing the forum, I found this thread :http://dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=39436 and again get anxious after I saw that relocating the PMD on side of the intake will too kill the PMD...:bawl:
So my question is : can I use this SSDiesel heat sink and relocate the all thing in the front bumper? Where in the front bumper, in one of the holes? If I do so, should I meet malfunction issue because of the PMD getting wet under rain?
Thanks for your help, I'm a bit loss.
rbr1317 08-30-2007, 06:11 PM I have the SSDiesel pmd/heatsink but I relocated it under the front bumper. I bought an extension cable from Heath for the install.
corolla 08-30-2007, 06:18 PM I have a FSDCooler which is very similar mounted under front bumper.
I ran a bead of silicone around FSD and heat sync and bought an extension cable off of ebay. Quite happy with where it is and how it is!
Turbine Doc 08-30-2007, 06:22 PM anywhere outside the engine bay, SS Diesel oh my, all way in New Caladonia and you bought one without an extended warranty yikes. SSds can be mounted out of the bay just like the DSG one which some believe to be genesis of the SSd one. SSD does not agree with us on out of bay mounting, neither does DSG for that matter, but we aren't making a living selling drivers either, just don't want to keep replacing them.
Am I reading correctly you original IP mounted one failed, and now you have replaced it with the SSD one, if that is the case the on IP one may still have some life & may make a good spare for the out of bay mounting, remove it from the IP, remove the plastic covers over transistors, then remove the mounting nuts, buff up the nut seating surface, and retorque the nuts 6-7 INCH pounds of torque, you may bring it back from the dead as a standby spare, plug it in & see if that did help, if not get another used but good spare for your backup, when/if the remoted SSD fails
eppoh 08-30-2007, 06:28 PM At first I relocated it on top of the intake., That lasted about 6 months. Heeded some good advice from this forum and mounted under/below front bumper. There are some holes in the bottom of the bumper already. Just get some bar stock from the building supply with holes in it- mount the heat sink to the bar and the bar to the bumper.
Mine has been here about 4 years.
6.5silverado 08-30-2007, 06:46 PM A guy that i meet at a diesel shop near me had what i think is a pretty good idea. He took the PMD and mounted it insde the air box on the pre filter side. he didnt use a heat sinc because there will be a constant flow of air over it. the only problem i saw was it will kind of hinder air flow through the box but, it should stay nice and cool.
matuva 08-30-2007, 09:53 PM ;) OK, I'm convinced.
I Just order an extension cable of ebay. Should have buy one from our supporting dealer, but ebay is a lot more simple from myside due to easy use of Paypal for paying ebay sellers.
So, as soon as the extension cable will arrive, the SSdiesel kit will move to front bumper.
The only thing I'm still a bit anxious about is moisture on PMD plug in case of rain, but there's probably a solution..
TD, your suggestion about the old one on IP is interesting... but I'm so lazy, and when I look all the job to do to grab the corpse :( but maybe it's not as worse as I think, but I haven't get much experience on taking out an intake on a 6.5...
By the way, the PMD actually runnig is a used one. I just ordered a new one too and will install all that new stuff outside engine bay, and the actual one will go back to spare status. At least I'm sure it works!
Thanks a lot for all your suggestions and pics.
That's the first 6.5 I own and the first time I experienced a stall while driving : not a pleasant experience
I also have to say a big thanks to all in this forum : I had the time to get set and bought a spare PMD after browsing all your post and that has been a great help. Without that, I should still be crying on the side of my truck, and, one last info, a new PMD here is sold $USD 1 250.00
Who says someone is making money?

I like your heat sink. It looks like the same one I will be selling. I think it works good. I had mine right behind the bumper and it stayed nice and cold. Glad to hear that it still is working for you.:D

$1250 for a PMD    at those rates I would be a grave robbing extrordinare, king of the PMD down under, yours is a 96 so only upper intake is needed to come off, a ratcheting box spanner with a hex driver bit should let you get at the PMD mounting screws. Now if we were talking about a dual stat housing, I'd pass there also, I've yet to figger a way to get at those without pulling both intakes

ROFL! For the little story, I was willing to buy a 6.5 for a long time ago, but always gave up because of local part prices.
Then I realized ebay is my friend and found this forum. I said myself : "bingo! I can realize my dream and own a 6.5! and so did I.
If I was considering only local parts prices, and left alone, it should still be a dream...

Yes, dual stat. Mine is late 96 (or early 97?) ;)

No worries about moisture. Never been a problem for me. I recall someone told me that he had his riding in a 5 gallon bucket of water in the bed for test purposes- for 2 years.
Turbine Doc 08-31-2007, 11:25 AM That was a Heath unit with proper sealing using a thermal epoxy, I would not dunk any other configured driver, the socket connection on any driver will be okay in the weather, as that uses a weather tite connector with a seal, area of concern for any other than Heath driver would be water intrusion into the transistor cavity, once the driver is mated to your cooler and proper torque is applied, a bead of RTV silicone at the base joint probably not a bad idea, I have a driver that got a little moisture in the transistor cavity & I was surprised how fast surface rust appeared, vital to good operation of a driver is clean bond between transistor case (gnd) and stud other gnd path. Corrosion along stud-locknut-transistor case will reduce or completely stop flow of trons and no signal or errors to the signal causing intermittent faults
matuva 08-31-2007, 11:48 AM I will be using thermal compound such as Artic silver 5 between the PMD and heat sync.
That should help a lot heat transfer between PMD and cooler and by the same I believe will help insulating the transistors from possible moisture intrusion.
I think too that a bead of silicon at the base joint will help a lot in that quest.
Eppoh, thanks for sharing your experience, I will probably mount mine the same way than yours ;)
