: tailgate (rearend) height
NC Hauler 08-29-2007, 12:41 PM Question for the Dually crowd: I just traded in my 05 K3500 DRW/CC/LB/D/A LT3, for an 07.5', K3500 DRW/CC/LB/D/A LTZ. It's the new body style with the LMM Duramax. I'm having my 5th wheel hitch transferred from the 05 to the 07, and it "appears" to me that the height of the backend of the 07' is higher then the back end of the 05'. Pinweight of the 5er is approx. 2850#. I'm "suppose" to head out on a camping trip Sunday, am I going to run into a problem with the "combo" not being level? I mean, DANG, I hope not. I will have 500 miles on the truck by then and will tow at the recommended towing break in speed for the next 500 miles while towing the 5er, but I'm really worried that I may not even be able to go if I have a "way out of level situation". Will the truck "squat" low enough to where I'm as level as I was with my 05'. I figure most of you, like myself, tow with your dually and figure some of you have gone from the 04-05's into the 07-08 models and might be able to help me with an answer. thanks ahead of time.
nextlevel38 08-29-2007, 01:45 PM you should be fine i just swapped my 05 to the 08 yesterday, hooked it up/ works just fine . the 07.5-08 seem to have a little more squat. might be for the softer ride..
NC Hauler 08-29-2007, 06:03 PM Thanks for the info, I'll pick up the truck tomorrow afternoon, I'm going to back it under the 5er and "hook up", I'm hoping it'll be just fine. I'm still trying to figure out if I can make my "5er tailgate" work on the 07'. Tried it once, and it appears GM has changed the way the tailgate hooks into it's position. Probably going to have to do a little customizing on it to make it work on this truck.
cdowns1 08-29-2007, 06:29 PM I haven't looked at the new body styles yet but I was told that they were making the bed deeper. If that is true wouldn't it affect the amount of clearance between the trailer and bed?
byronlj 08-29-2007, 07:23 PM The 3500 will squat 2 5/8" with a 2800# pin weight (experience). The bed is 2" taller, so you will lose that much between your bedrails and your 5'er (experience). Rides smoother than my 04 however. Towing height is the same.

catch03 08-29-2007, 07:55 PM the 07.5 is 1.5 differance to the floor to the top of the bed from the 06 i had i just lowered my pin box one bolt down
NC Hauler 08-29-2007, 09:22 PM Ouch, I'm already on the bottom bolt hole, can't drop the Reese 16K hitch any lower. Now I'm starting to worry a bit.
deepsouth 08-29-2007, 09:45 PM If you raise the front torsion bars an inch or so, it will change the rear angle and give you a little more room in the rear. You might have to have the toe in adjusted. If you tell the dealer the front end is out of line in the first 7,000 miles, they will align it for free. I did this on my 02 and on my 04. The front is just close, not dead on from the factory.
thejdman04 08-29-2007, 10:03 PM should be ok
bigd4me2 08-30-2007, 08:01 PM if needed, you can change out the rear leaf shackles.i had to change mine to the 1.5 inch but,i think belltech listed them as a 1 inch.they level the stock truck out nicely.and easy=1/2 hour
NC Hauler 08-30-2007, 08:46 PM Well, I got it home this evening and after hitching up, I only had about 4" of space between the bedrails and the 5er. I raised the hitch one set of bolt holes and, for now, I believe it'll be fine. Got almost 6" from front to back. I need to get it setting on level ground to see how it looks. I was sitting on "fairly" level ground and it looked like it did when the 05' was hitched up to the 5er. I appreciate all the info. I'll "tweak" on it when I get back from my camping trip. I still need to put about another 150 miles on the truck between now and Sunday. That would give me 500 miles break in before towing, then I guess I'll need to take it easy for a while when towing. I usually try to follow the guidelines that GM say's to use when breaking the truck in, but doggone, it's hard to keep the truck under 60 miles an hour, much less 55. First time you towed, how did you drive. My towing is probably 90% in the mountains of NC,SC,TN,VA and WV.
Tucker dog 08-30-2007, 09:07 PM I had to flip my axels under the leaf springs on my 5th to level the trailer out. Rides better, less were on the second axel.
cdowns1 08-31-2007, 03:05 PM Be careful backing into some of those campsites in NC and TN, those dips and rises can get real close even when you have 6-8 inch clearance on the bedrails, seen a lot of bent bedrails in the last 6 years of doing this full time rving. Have a safe fun trip.
NC Hauler 08-31-2007, 05:30 PM Yea, I know what your talking about. I have the Reese 16K slider hitch. I had it in a shortbed truck sometime back and there is nothing wrong with it, so I kept it. It pivots to the sides and front to rear, so that helps out to some extent. At this point, it's sitting almost exactly the same way it was on my 05', I towed with that for two years and never had a problem. When I get back from this camping trip,(leaving Sunday), I'm going to look at it a little closer to see if I need to do anything else to it. I need to put about another 120 miles on the truck before I start to tow Sunday. Kind of hard to keep this truck under 60 miles an hour, but guess I need to follow the "break in" guidelines, I always have with the diesels. I normally tow at 55-60 mph anyway, get my best mpg then.

The 07.5 still have torsion bars in the front? I thought they went to coil overs? Or is that only on the 1/2 tons?

 AMEN TO THAT!
All went well on my trip thru the Carolinas and the variety of campgrounds but it was parking it at home. It's a tight spot and while backing in, there are slants on each side . . . I didn't even notice anything until I was parked. The 5er put a little boo boo in the bed rail cover. I consider it a "war Wound" - more like a reminder to be careful!
cdowns1 09-04-2007, 10:35 PM Glad it wasn't any worse than a boo boo. I have seen a few with some pretty good creases in the bed rails.
Happy travels.
