Howdy

I put the nicktane kit on the truck early last spring. Since
then, Ive added maybe 7000 miles. I also changed the stock fuel
filter at that point.

When do I need to change them?

I was planning on just leaving the stock one there for a LONG time, but Ive heard about rusting issues.

What do I need to do here?

You can probably leave the stock filter on for a long
time, though you might want to go ahead and
change at 15k just avoid any warranty questions.
The CAT filter can probably go between 10 and 15
thousand miles, maybe more, depending on your
driving.

I went 15K on both of mine and I had a lot more life in them.........

I change them both at the same time regardless.

Is Conneticut a CARB state?

CARB diesel is FAR cleaner/better than what the rest of the Us gets.

We are already on much lower sulfur than non carb states. Kinda like 1/2 way between the 2006 reqs.

I have that same set up on my 03. Changed the filters at about 8k. The RACOR was like new when I cut it open and the NICKTANE Filter was discolored but looked like it wcould go another 6-8K. The Nicktane has little rust in the bottome and the RACOR can was shinny clean. I am very impressed with the setup and the job it does.

Manny,

At 8k miles my CAT showed rust--not a lot but not small either.

It will all depend on the fuel.

Now my OEM was clean and no rust. So--as Tsckey said--the OEM could go longer--the CAT takes the brunt.

At about 10 bucks--I would change the CAT filter and cut it open and see for yourself.

Just as a point of refrence about the CAT filter, I have the same filter in my big truck with a CAT 14.7 liter 550 hp. I usually go 10,000 miles between oil and fuel filter changes. At about 5 mpg that's about 2,000 gallons run through the filter, plus the fuel recirculates so I'm sure the amount of fuel run through the filter is much higher. And I skipped one filter change once and went 20,000 miles with the same filter, 4,000 gallons plus recirculation, and I did not notice any performance loss with the extended filter change. I did not cut the filter open after use to see what it looked like inside but like I said I didn't notice any power loss.

I would say with the better milage of the Duramax's and running less fuel through the filter's they should be able to last 20,000 miles.

But that all depends on the condition of the fuel in your area. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif

Our illustrious state wants to be just like CA..........so I am sure that we have strict requirements.......

I know they like to tax the hell out of the fuel..........http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley7.gif

Thanks for the imput all.

I guess Ill cut open the first one, and make a decision from there.

Tony - CARB is working here. Our air quality is getting better
every year, and it is visible. Im all for it, nothing quite as
nasty as looking out over a smog filled city. I wouldnt care if
CARB limited all diesel truck use to work related travel only.
Air would get better, fuel prices may fall, etc. No sweat
off my sack.

But diesel does get an extra 8c per gallon tax over gas.

mannytranny,

i checked the first few at 12-15k, which looked to have decent life left. the last 3 or 4 have been 18-20k and they still showed a small amount of clean media. just like Ron said, the filters are so cheap i probably wouldn't go more than 20k.. i just get to curious to see what it looks like insidehttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif

regarding the rust, i usually see about 75% of it get caught in the cat filter. one of my friends lives in a small town with 1 station. his oem filter will have a a very small amount of rust (he runs no additive either) after 20k. his cat about a third of the round bottom area on the bottom... with additive no rust in either.

Thanks DP.

Any suggestions on where to get the filter? I also need one for my TDI....Its just a tad smaller.

I wish you would design one for the TDI. The Duramax kit was like
something from the factory. My TDI kit (which costed 110 bucks)
is not nearly as nice..........If you wanna know who I bought it from,
PM me...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/hihi.gif

Leaked air bubbles like you wouldnt believe. Had to torque banjo fittings down to 100 lb ft to get it to stop.
