: best NO Droan\Drone exhaust for LLY
Copper_cosmo 08-29-2007, 03:46 AM Please tell me what systems you have had success with, I currently have a MBRP 4” SS and the drone is terrible. On the hwy or under a load. I have tried every trick listed on this site with no luck of getting rid of it. I did have it from the turbo back but that was even worse. The Mbrp only does it after the truck has warmed up and gotten on temp. during that warm up time it sounds great. I have only had it on the truck 3 months now but it has got to go.Thinking of going with the TTS or Jardine any others? Looking for as close to stock sound as possible, with out the annoying drone I only want to do this one more time. It was hard to tell the wife I going to buy another new exhaust for the truck this soon. but she has had enough of it too. Thanks for your help let me know what has worked for you.
Copper_cosmo 08-29-2007, 03:57 AM Any mod out there please erase one of the 2 post on this I am not sure how it happened and can not seem to delete it myself thank you.
RaceHemi 08-29-2007, 08:34 AM I have the 4" TTS, it's quiet in and out of the cab, with and without a load.
caroftheweek1 08-29-2007, 10:09 AM i had the magnaflow system on 2 different trucks and it was very nice. It was loud enough to hear it at idle and under excelleration but at highway speeds it quieted right down.
another option is to just change the muffler. save you some money.
hdd-max 08-29-2007, 04:11 PM Corsa is the quietest I have heard. But it is expensive.
Duramaximumcrap 08-30-2007, 10:07 AM Have you tried revesing the muffler and a resinotor?
Copper_cosmo 08-31-2007, 01:00 AM thanks everyone for the replys. Duramaximumcrap I have reversed the muffler back and forth a couple of times helps a little not enough. also checked and rechecked every thing no rubbing/contact anywhere. did not do the resonator from reading some post people said it helped but was still there. don't want to spend more and still have the same prblem. the one thing that puzzles me is if the engine is cold the system sounds great no droan nice sound. but once everything gets to normal operating temp and a few miles down the road the droan comes in. like something expands due to the temp and cause this. haven't been able to figure it out yet. hard to fix what I can't see going down the road. thanks again for the replys
Duramaximumcrap 08-31-2007, 08:03 AM I think its about $90 to try a resonator but a whole new exhaust is alot more time and money. Your going to sell the system and get a new one if it does not work any way so it might be worth trying?
George Quigley 08-31-2007, 12:51 PM I am using a banks four inch cat back on my GMC one ton long box, extended box truck. It work good and I have no drone. Yet I do have a vibration damper installed on the down pipe between the cat and the turbo. I am also running a super chip flash paq, this seems to make the engine run much smoother and gives it a lot more power.
Bansheezz 08-31-2007, 04:54 PM i have the 4" tts, it's quiet in and out of the cab, with and without a load.
x2
mark45678 08-31-2007, 04:59 PM if you want it QUIET put the cat back in the system....... problem will be solved.
mtnmax 08-31-2007, 05:08 PM I had the Banks 4" turbo back and had only a hint of droan while pulling at 60-65 mph.
Copper_cosmo 09-04-2007, 07:01 AM Cat has been back on system for a while now . I tried it with out it for week couldn't handel it. but even with the cat back on still very annoying drone. Thank you for your replys please keep them coming.
1literduceater 09-04-2007, 07:37 AM I am new here and I am looking at purchasing a new exhaust - what is this dreaded drone noise you speak of?
feetfats 09-04-2007, 07:47 PM Not trying to insult you here but you do have all your hangers hangin on rubber right?
I dont know what your setup looks like but if your exhaust ends under the truck it will also drone (but yours probably ends out the side)
I suppose you could tighten your clamps a bit and maybe even try putting a few welds on the pipes at all the joints (just some little 1/2" or 1/4" welds one on each side of the pipe at 3 o clock and one at 9 o clock) being stainless this will be a pain in the ass if you dont have the right equipment.
I have heard of some people putting some sort of counterweight on the exhaust but I don't really understand. Maybe try clamping something heavy on top of the pipe in a few spots.
These are just some silly ideas but you probably arent too interested in getting a new system. good luck
Roy W. 09-04-2007, 10:13 PM I have a cat back TTS system and can't tell the noise level from stock, even when pulling my trailer in the mountains. Their secret is a 30 inch long muffler.
Duramaximumcrap 09-06-2007, 09:41 PM How did MBRP become the most popular exhaust on the pole if many people are having this drone problem? I had it on my 01 and it sounded fine. Maybe I had a drone noise and did not know what it was? What does it sound like?
Seems like every truck is different. Mine droaned worse w/ the stock system. I have a full MBRP system and, while it is louder in general, I don't get the dreaded droan at 60-65. I would go with the TTS. Actually I am going to give the TTS a try. The MBRP sounds sweet it's just a little too much for me anymore.
1literduceater 09-07-2007, 11:32 AM So again....what is this dreaded droan/drone noise that everyone speaks of?
DSTRBD 09-07-2007, 01:28 PM Drone is a resonance sound that some trucks get in the cab. It is almost like a pipe vibrating against the frame at a very high speed. It sounds like you are inside a drum. Drone only happens on some trucks at a certain RPM. The cause is unknown, but it can be fixed if it shows up with a resonator.
Duramaximumcrap 09-07-2007, 08:31 PM Well I know now that I did not have that noise. It was just a bit louder than I wanted at highway speeds so when I get one for my LMM I am going to reverse the muffler like some people suggested to bring the rumble down a little at higher speeds. Loved it when I put my foot in it though.
Robinhood 09-11-2007, 10:42 PM Another vote to the TTS system. I've had mine for 2 years now and am very satisfied.
Been thinking about doing a Cat-delete pipe with fingerstick and EGR blocker plate.
Mad Maxx 09-11-2007, 10:49 PM My vote goes to the Corsa.....windows up...I hear the Intake more than the exhaust..windows down....all hell breaks loose with the exhaust :ro)
bluebeast 09-12-2007, 12:42 AM I've had good luck and loud, without any drone, results from my summit racing (i think Borla makes it) exhaust. Clamps and hangers are way better than most others also that I see. Hog Performance looks very similar and would be a good choice too.:)
Kiwi Ed 09-12-2007, 05:32 AM Would a wire braded (looking at the outside) Flexable Coupling help reduce the Drone?
Designated Dave 09-17-2007, 09:28 PM I hav a 4" silverline exhaust w/ cat delete and have no drone whatso ever. Matter of fact I don't get too much sound even at full throttle.
JRKRACE 09-17-2007, 10:13 PM Banks cat-back for me. I wanted no drone myself and the Banks kit did the job.
dave29 09-18-2007, 06:25 PM Corsa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
