I am in the process of changing the fuel filter out on my 2004 Crew Cab. Got the old filter off, thanks to the excellent directions here, I am now in the process of priming the new fuel filter. I have been pumping quite a while, approximately 200 pumps, still no fuel. What have I done wrong or need to do differently?

check to make sure you have no leaks. Take the filter off and check to o ring. Is the WIF sensor on securely, it the oil ring in place? You probably got a o ring on wrong.

Air leaks? Make sure the o-rings are seated properly on the filter and that the bleed screw is cracked. It should take a lot of pumps, but 200 seems excessive. Good Luck!

Thanks. I will give those suggestions a try.

One thing to try for future reference is to put petrolium jelly on the
big (top) o-ring. Will help hold it in place. Maybe placing
a weight on o-ring to flatten it out, for a few hours before. My
biggest problem.

I took the filter back off, filled it with diesel, and put it back on. I made sure the large o-ring stayed in place. Went to pump until fuel would run out the bleed screw, no fuel is being pumped, just air. I put the filter on tight when I put it back on. I am now stumped.

Make sure you fill the new filter with fuel and then try to bump the starter a few times and then prime it, I've seen that work before.

there's an air leak someplace. make sure you put the o-ring on the WIF sensor and that the drain is closed tight.

It only takes me about 30-40 pumps with a new, dry filter.Edited by: JohnnyO

I fill mine with fuel tighten it up and turn the key, starts right up no primeing.

I have changed mine 3 times. I always fill it with diesel and pump it until I feel "resistance" (approx 10 to 20 times). Always worked for me-good luck.

Check to make sure that the center rubber seal is present and seated snugly as well as the large peripheral O-ring.

The primer pump was dry. I changed the filter according to the directions found on this site, and when I was pumping the primer, it was blowing air. A neighbor, a former diesel mechanic, came over and he removed the primer pump, filled it with diesel, and if finally began pumping diesel. After wearing ourselves out pumping, he feels the system is 'air locked'. Is this a possible explanation and if so, what is the cure? Any other suggestions?

This is a wonderful forum and I have lurked here for many months, gathering info and learning. Thanks for all the help with my problem and thanks for a great site.

First, I advise against filling the fuel with fuel.. Its unlikely your gonna fill it on the dirtly side and do we really want unfiltered fuel going in our system?

Second. When having trouble priming, reach in and hit the key, it may even start with the little fuel left. If it dont, crank it for 15 seconds and reprime. Also remove the fuel cap to prevent an unlikely vacuum in the tank

Well, I had my truck towed to the dealership. The primer pump was bad, they replaced it, pumped 15-20 times, and she fired off. Thanks for all the help.

He said it was a 2004. Probably first time it was used since the factory, if they use it there. You know, I have hard time remembering what else I used the prime pump for other than the first time I changed my filter. Do you use yours on a regular basis? Would be curious why.

Maybe it was the way I read the post. It seemed like this was his first filter change and he was saying the primer was bad. Nothing against the guy, I was just wondering if it had yet to be used WTF it would be bad. I guess just another sh*t part of our sh*t fuel systems.
