When it starts I seem to get a puff of white smoke. What does this indicate? How can I fix it? Any additive help? It otherwise runs great. 1997 3500, crew cab, 6.5, less than 100k miles.

Hot, Cold, All the time? Extended crank time?

If its just a puff of white that goes away once the engine kicks I don't think you've got anything to worry about. During cranking, on any diesel, fuel delivery is at maximum, and some pumps even go to overfuel. The puff of smoke is normally black, white could mean you have low compression, glow plug or injector problem keeping the fuel from igniting immediately.

It starts up pretty quick and doesn't smoke when running. Only smoke a puff when cold. I'm gonna look into removing the "snorkel", if I have one in the fender.
