This may be a stupid question but this is the place to ask it i guess when you guys talk about limp mode what do you actually mean. i think i know but what happens. And what do you do to correct it. does it hurt your truck or is it a measure that pertects your ally before it gets hurt.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley18.gif

Generally speaking, limp mode is a protection function of the PCM that shuts power down for the motor or the trans in order to prevent potential or additonal damage.
Most of the talk about limp mode you will see here is the Allison Tranny controller locking out gears to protect itself when it sees slipping beyond the acceptable normal level. This is typically caused by too much power coming at the tranny. As the saying goes... been there... limped that. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif
In most cases... this is just a notification to the driver that excessive wear and tear are occuring but that does not mean you are to the point of breaking things yet.

does the limp mode have to be cleared or does it reset when you turn off the engine?

Most of the limp mode triggers will clear after the motor is shutoff for a bit. I haven't paid attention to the timing, but it's probably somewhere in the 10-15 minute range.

I'm new to diesel's and thought I did something major to my Allison which listed in my first post, turns out I just "limped it". Should the check engine light go out? Mine is staying on.

It seems like you aren't really concerned that you limped the
tranny. You could be doing damage to it. Whatever you did,
don't do it again, because the more you limp it, the easier it will be
and sooner or later, you'll be buying a new tranny.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley5.gif

03 Chevy, D/A, C/C. Bought truck at 11miles. Now have 36,000 miles. Limped twice. First, was at 290miles. Tried to clear. Stop truck, wait, then restart. Ran for 5 minutes then limped again. Did this routine until reached the dealer. Bad injector (1). Second time, same routine, would clear for 5 minutes, then loss of power. This time an entire Allison replacement (4900 Miles). Since then no limped mode.
Limp mode, SES light on, ally reduces power, no speed. Can't do 20mph with pedal floored. Truck is protecting itself.
Anyway, since then no problems.
