I had a friends truck in the shop a couple weeks ago for injectors, swapped out all 8 because he had a fuel knock at times and balance rates all out of whack on a couple holes. No big deal, pop in some injectors and ship it. About 10 days later he calls me on the phone saying the thing is knocking really bad. Well he is a tech also, and said it was definetely a fuel knock, really bad knock. It was a Friday night, I said just wait till Monday and tow it to the shop close to you. He lives about 50 miles away and the way it was knocking, it wasn't driveable. So he tows it to that dealer and they get back to him 2 days later and say it has 2 holes with 0psi compression, #5 and #8!!! I couldn't believe it. They called my shop and told my manager what was going on and if we wanted to come get it or what we wanted to do about this. The manager at the other store called the district rep to find out what to do about it and he said to tear it down and to stop if there were any workmanship issues. So here I am picking my brain trying to figure out what I could have done to cause this. In the meantime, the boss decides we should send the hook to go get it. $250-$300 tow bill. I get the truck at about 3:30, start it up and it idles ok, but then starts to smoke and knock when accelerating. Pull glow plugs and do comp. test..... all cyls 370-380 psi. ( he has a battery problem I've been bugging him to fix, higher cranking rpm may help the readings). Except #2 has massive fuel spraying out while cranking with glow plug removed and FICM disconnected. Pop #2 injector out , it dripping with fuel, and go home. Next day, put a new injector in and start engine at 10:30am. Runs ok, lots and lots of smoke for a while, that injector filled the whole exhaust with fuel. Road tested after the smoke cleared, good to go. I can't believe the other shop said it had 2 dead holes. They said they had their 3 best techs look at it, including the shop foreman. What a joke, and the tone of their voice when I was on the phone with them was like they were thinking, man, you really screwed this one up. They told my buddy, "$1100 to tear the heads off and then you'll need and engine, for another $12000, or you can just authorize the $12000 engine right off the bat and save yourself $1100 in teardown." All it needed was 1 injector, I guess the one I installed 10 days prior was no good. I'm glad we towed it to our place, it didn't cost him a dime. Oh yeah, mileage on the truck is about 130,000.

Do you think something (debris)on reassembly caused #2 injector to fail so soon?

My conclusion: Anyone with a DMAX that lives in OC should have Nicholas Chev etched in their memories.

Mackin, that is a possible scenario, I think if that was truly the case, it would have failed sooner. They put about 800 miles on it when #2 dropped. He did say he heard a slight rattle a couple days earlier, I think it was just a bad injector, it happens. I had been on a roll for quite a while though with too many injector replacement jobs and no problems.

Oh yeah, I forgot he had mentioned for me to check for a coolant leak that he had brought to a few shops to check out, he had been smelling coolant for quite awhile, but no drips on the ground. Well that other dealer also did the injectors at about 90,000miles, before the updated injectors. I found the coolant leak, the rubber coolant hose that runs along top of the right side cylinder head was leaking, so I popped on a new hose. I saw it right away because when I pulled the lower valve cover there was coolant residue all over it, how could they not have seen this during the previous repair when they had this apart and he was complaining of a coolant leak/smell? It was a 4" piece of rubber hose and took about 2 minutes to replace.

I had mine done once. Went to pick the truck up and it was knocking and smoking. They checked again and said that two injectors "failed" between the time they road tested it and then parked it. Sure. They put in another set and all is good.

I'm not sure if they were really trying to deceive, but I know the service manager and shop foreman, I thought they knew their stuff, but apparently not. The service manager told mine that he had the shop foreman and his other 2 "top" techs check it out, and all agreed that the engine was shot. What a shame. If an engine has 2 dead holes, I think if you had any idea what you were doing, you could tell just by cranking it what it sounds like if there's a couple bad cylinders.

I can't believe all the times I have been all over the GM site and I never saw those forums. Thanks Eric, I will check those out.Edited by: socaldieseltech

I am new to the board and have been filling my head with all the good info from you certified mechanics. Just wanted to thank both of you for all of your honesty. I have been on other forums about other issues and have been given some bad info. It is much appreciated to be able to read a forum and hear from actual mechanics who KNOW what they are talking about and don't THINK they know what they are talking about. Thanks again,DL.
