: Temperature/winter cover
Cougar281 11-12-2004, 10:53 PM Now that the temperature is down into the 30's and 40's, I've noticed
that my LLY runs at just over 185 (According to the dash gauge). Up
until now, it has run just shy of 210. Is it still too warm for the
grille winter cover, and if not what effect will having the truck run
warmer have? Anything useful other than warm up faster?
WAskier 11-13-2004, 04:22 AM The diesel will run more efficiently at it's operating temp which I assume is around 210. Which should give you better fuel mileage.
LanduytG 11-13-2004, 07:46 AM When I put the winter front on my 6.5TD I gained back the economy I lost when going to winter blend fuel.

BarryD 11-13-2004, 07:47 AM I noticed the same thing lately. I got to use the winter cover last year and
learned one thing. Don't use the full bumper part of the cover.
I can't believe they use this just to cover the two openings beside the
license plate. It will accumulate small stones and will scratch the bumper
chrome. It did on mine http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley7.gif
It is a bear to get off and back on in the winter. I made a two covers out
of thick rubber. They are cut two the size of the openings. Use a steel
plate painted black and a some long screws to to keep it attached.
Cost 15 bucks and you don't even know they are there. I use the GM
supplied Grill cover and find it easy enough to remove for cleaning. Edited by: BarryD
SteveNorCal 11-13-2004, 11:27 AM Cougar,
It's about that time. For me when it gets into the 30's all the time is when I put mine on for the winter. I use the SS Cloud Riders. Looks good and works good!
My o4 did not come with the cover, should it have?
if not, does anybody know the part #?
Thanks...
BarryD 11-13-2004, 03:07 PM Yes it should have. Funny thing is most people in GM don't seem to know
that. Looks like the guys in PDI might have snaged yours. They get
thrown in at the factory along with the smokers package.
When I took delivery of mine it was January and about 30 below. Asked
them about it and they thought I was nuts. Asked them what the stuff in
the back seat was and they told me they didn't know.
It took the going all the way up to the Gen. Mgr. level to get them to do it.
When GM HQ called me to ask how I liked my truck I told the story and
they also had know idea what a winter cover was and could find no
reference to it in the computer. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley5.gif
96vette 11-13-2004, 06:21 PM The winter front cover only comes with the cold weather package. If your truck doesnt have the cold weather package (block heater etc) then you dont get the winter front.
Cougar281 11-13-2004, 06:26 PM The winter cover was a $55 option for me...
_nar_ 11-13-2004, 07:36 PM Mine had it as a 55$ option as well.
baimpala 11-13-2004, 08:06 PM Same here, and I have the block heater. Maybe it's a regional thing.
BLUEHERON 11-13-2004, 11:40 PM Me, too. I have the block heater, but the cover was a $55 option.
BarryD 11-14-2004, 08:59 AM I just looked at the GM Website and built a Durmax. No option for a
"Winter Package" or a Winter Cover, The manual doesn't say it is an
option. Perhaps the dealers have found a way to make 55 bucks?
I have heard of people in Arizona getting a winter cover. You cannot
drive a diesel truck in weather below 32 degrees without one. Can't be an
option.

ldand 11-14-2004, 09:34 AM You have to take the winter cover in the northern states. I ordered my truck in Iowa and live in MN. I did not have to have one in Iowa but I wanted one. They all come with a block heater tho.
DavesDmax 11-14-2004, 10:47 AM Based on the geographical area you buy your truck from, the winter cover is either free on a $55.00 option.
I bought my truck in NW Ohio where the cover is a $55.00 option.
Had I bought my truck in MI, it would have been included free.
For some reason, 50 miles makes all the difference in the world. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/hihi.gif
gearhead 11-14-2004, 10:57 AM I got mine in central indiana and mine came free
DJ-IL 11-14-2004, 04:07 PM If it comes free, where would it be located? I haven't seen one with mine yet. I might have to buy one before winter is over. Edited by: DJ-IL
Gruffid 11-14-2004, 04:43 PM I tried to get my dealer to give me one. They said that only in a few states get them free. Otherwise you have to buy the option from the parts dept.
Oh well.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley19.gif
96vette 11-14-2004, 05:33 PM I bought one just in case but I never seen one on a diesel here in Maryland yet

deadfurrow 11-15-2004, 01:04 AM I got mine in central indiana and mine came free
I bought my truck in northeast Indiana, & it didn't come with a winter cover at all. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley5.gif
IdahoRob 11-15-2004, 12:04 PM I bought my truck in Idaho and the cover came free. Found it behind the rear seats.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley1.gif
Rob
coolbeans 11-15-2004, 12:17 PM Here in Wyo. mine came free.
BarryD - no offense at all, but It gets to -22 and lower here most winters and all my diesels sit outside, start and run perfectly, and I have not used additives, but I have used a block heater for about 2hrs b4 start just a few times when it looked really nasty out. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif
JohnnyO 11-15-2004, 07:07 PM In NJ it's free. Behind the back seat in the Crew Cab. I use just the top wne it gets below 30. the truck start fine without it at low temps but it sure warms up quicker with it.
_nar_ 11-18-2004, 07:42 PM Coolbeans where are you? I got my truck here in wheatland and so
did dad and they were both a option on the sticker, came with the truck
but added $55 to the sticker price...
coolbeans 11-22-2004, 10:43 AM _nar_ - I'm in the Bridger Valley, I ordered the truck through a friend of mine
from Murdock Chev. in Salt Lake, Ut. The cover was behind the back
seat, and no reference on the sticker nor any $55.00 charge
anywhere.:)
monty 11-23-2004, 02:31 PM I put my winter front on when temps go below +50F on a continous basis. I find the engine and trans heats far more rapidly giving a better running engine with higher fuel economy. I use a Lund cold front. It is stainless steel and attaches to the stock grill.
Cougar281 11-23-2004, 02:36 PM I have noticed that the engine runs cooler when the temps are 50 and below...
dougdogs 11-24-2004, 03:30 PM In NJ it's free. Behind the back seat in the Crew Cab. I use just the top wne it gets below 30. the truck start fine without it at low temps but it sure warms up quicker with it.
I'm in NJ, and my 2005 doesn't have any (I just got soaked in the rain, checking for mine)
Nothing behind the seat, other than holddowns for kid's car seats and the lug wrench
mgmack 11-24-2004, 03:56 PM I have the engine block heater(no charge on sticker), but didn't get a cover
2500HD04 11-25-2004, 12:51 AM with my 05 in MN was a $55 option. just put it on today. Temps not to go above 30 for a while
