Its an 07 that was hard to find, 6 speed manual and a pre emission 5.9. Dealer did a 14 hour road trip to get it for me, so far its nice. I just have to get used to driving a stick again:rolleyes:.

Sorry to hear that you had to replace the D'max. Would've been good to find out what the root cause of the problem was. I can understand your predicament, though. You can't make any money with the truck in the shop.

Did you keep the LBZ or did you trade it in?

Good luck with your new ride! I'm sure you're going to work it hard. :)

Keep us posted on how the new Cummins behaves for you.

Good luck, I know how frsutrated you mst have been ,a nd dont let anyone give you any stuff for running a dodge. They ahve a great power train and cabs, paint etc have come a very long way from the old ones. Good luck, I would be very curious as to waht milage yoru getting w/the cummins vs d max same loads (or similar) similar routes. Dont be a stranger around here. Curious if you traded it (if not you sold it very quick). What Dodge dealer did you use out of curiosity?

Been watchin your post cause I've got about the same prob. I haul rv's too and under load I get heavy black smoke, low power, then comes the p0087 and limp. I got a Edge to monitor the eng and saw a dif between comand and actual rail press. I shimmed the frpr valve and the press is better but stil have the problem. I ordered a lift pump and will try that next. I have 190,000 mi and this is the only real prob with the truck. I would like to keep it, it's been good until this prob.
Question, can you haul fifth wheel with that short bed? We are required to have a 8ft bed with our company. I have also considered a Dodge
but that Cummins is so loud. This is my 2nd Duramax. Good luck with your new truck.

I was wondering the same thing. According to the Dodge web site, the Mega Cab is only available with a 6 ft 4.3 in bed. Is that going to pose a problem hauling a 5th wheel trailer?

Why did you want to go to a stick? I know dodge has a reputation for bad auto's but maybe the newer auto's are better now. I just cant imagine going back to a three pedal after using the Allison.:D Keep us posted on how that dodge treats ya. True, but every transport company I've checked frowns on using sliders on short bed trucks.

I'm sure he must have this figured out, though.

The new 6-speed auto is only available on the cab & chassis and then, only with the new 6.7 L Cummins that has all the new DPF emission crap.

To answer a few questions, the company I haul for allows slider hitches plus all the new Jayco's (thats all I haul) 5er's except for the triple axle toy hauler (which I don't haul) have the front cap designed for short beds so no issue there. As far as going back to a stick, well its going to take some getting use to, the Allison was the best but since I wanted a pre emission truck my only options were six speed manual or 4 speed auto. This will be my 8th Dodge with a Cummins, so I am pretty comfortable with my choice. So far this is my opinion, truck rides as good as the Chevy, interior room is superior (duh), interior noise is about the same, and I got 17" wheels this time. I will post how it tows after I tow the first load next week.

I hate to say it, but I'm ready to try a damn Dodge as well. I'm getting nowhere in a hurry with my LLY overheating issue, and my last two GMs have been plagued with problems...

My dad bought a 6.7 last week, and it's leaps and bounds ahead of the old Dodges as far as handling and interior.

I can't get excited about jammin' gears again, but I'm also going with a 5.9/6 speed if I make the swap.

How are EGTs while pulling heavy with the '07 5.9s? Is there enough turbo to handle a little extra fueling over the stock tune and still keep EGTs in check?

As long as the tune has sufficient timing to support the fuel.

Funny thing is, the SMARTY actually runs cooler than stock programming in level 1. Harness boxes seem to run a little warmer.

As far as turbos go, it's pretty pathetic. The good news is that bolt ons are simple.

Haulin Rv. Congrats on the new ride...verrrry nice.!

Might you have left a note to the new owner of your old LBZ...asking him to come over here and let us know what the issue finally was. ?? I would bet that there would be many here still curious to know what caused that particular issue with your D,max.

Still 280K = ~450,000 km. I can handle that.!

As has been mentioned previously...stay in touch from time to time.

Well I have just short of 2000 miles on it. So here is the comparison.

The Silverado has a bunch more bells and whistles. I miss the dic with the steering wheel controls, the climate control, and the way the remotes work(I used to leave it running and lock the doors with the other remote, Dodge does not allow that).

The Mega cab is by far a much larger cab, its wider too. The interior comfort is good, the center console is much larger, the extra storage under the center front seat is a nice touch.

Now the important stuff, as far as ride I would say they are comparable. I really could not say that one is by far better or worse than the other. Towing, the 6 speed manual and the Cummins is great. Many of the hills I went up and never downshifted with the Cummins, would have caused the Allison to drop a gear. Power wise when towing the Cummins does seem to have a bit more grunt, but the Duramax was no slouch. Unloaded the Duramax was a fun truck to drive and as far as just hammering around town it is the best. The Cummins with a 6 speed does just fine but the Allison just made it easier. So in the end for a hard working tow rig I like the manual trans and the Cummins, but for the everyday driver the Allison/Duramax combo is hard to beat.

Fuel economy. Now the Cummins is far from broken in, but I have pulled the same loads with the dmax to the same place and the Cummins is about 10-12% better on fuel loaded and its not broken in. Unloaded running about 70 I got about 1 mpg better than the the dmax did.

So there you have my review of the two trucks.

I run an '02 CTD 3/4 ton 4X4 6 spd. manual myself, I've said for years that nothing outworks a Cummins, it'll be interesting to see how fast you get to 500K with that one! If I could justify the $$$, I'd have a Mega Cab myself-you could have a party in that back seat!!

Congrats, on the new ride! (Atleast it wasn't a FORD)

My dads Company just bought 3 new MegaCabs, Love the interior room!

We haven't had them long enough to compare to our D-Max's, but I can say that the new Dodge's are VERY QUIET compared to the old one's, can't hardly tell they're running. We plan on pulling 5ver's w/ our's as well, and I imagine its gonna be a tight squeeze doing it, but if the dodge's can't get it done we kept the D-max's so we are still in good shape!!:D

But without the integral seat belts an easy fix, I wanted to change out the seats in my LBZ and the replacements in the aftermarket are hard to find. I found one set, but they were like $1500! I plan on changing out hte ones in the Dodge for some captains chairs (surplus rv) and can get some really nice ones for $400 pair.

I wonder who will take over for Haulin rv's absence? I believe he was the leader in miles. Haulin, keep us all posted on the performance, and good luck! Someone has to step up for the mileage leader.

Sorry to hear that you got rid of the LBZ. But congrats on the new ride, I hope it serves you well. Don't be a stranger. BTW, will your Rockstars fit this truck?

I'll have to agree on that. I had an '05 Dak that had "buckets", 6 way and heated...they sucked.! The material they used was absoultely the worst material I have ever seen for truck seat material...just look at it sideways and it's stained.

But I will say this, I put 85,000 miles on it in 2 years and other than the brakes (duh.. it's a Dodge), I had no other issues at all. Mileage was pretty good too for a 4.7L V8 gasser....a bit skittish in the rear too when uloaded.

Still if I had to, Dodge with a 5.9 would be the only other choice.

Good luck with the Dodge.

I looked long and hard at the 07 Dodge / 5.9 Cummins offering before I bought. I didn't like the seats in the Dodge and the back seat was small in the quad cab compared to the GM crew cab, I didn't want the length of a Mega Cab, other than that I thought the Dodge was a comparable product to the GM.

Dutchpilot I believe has 50k miles by now on his 07.5 Duramax LMM. I think it might be only 6 months old. I believe he he hauls rv's as well.

There is a company in Utah that does the MegaCab longbed conversions for $5K. Also, the '06 factory Jacob's brake is nowhere close to the performance of the Pacbrake.

No more P0087 for me I solved the problem this morning.

O.k. since it's been on the road for a while, and you probably have 10k miles on it by now, what's the skinny? Likes/dislikes??

His fancy-schmancy new Dodge retaliated on him for previously owning a Duramax and tried to strangle him with the seatbelt. He only survived by pointing out how many Dodge trucks he had before his Duramax. :D

I have 22,000 miles so far. I really like it. No problems so far, fuel economy is better, and the extra room is great.

I raced my ATV to the bottom of a hill, problem was that I was not on it:eek:. Looks like 6 weeks or so until I will be healed. They have me in a brace and I go back next Tue. and if it has not moved and started healing all is good, if not its surgery with a plate and screws.

Towing is better by on avg almost 2mpg, empty is about 1-1.5mpg. My overall avg is 1.8 mpg better (hand calculated).

Found out today surgery w/ a plate and some screws this Friday, so no hauling trailers for a while:(.

Good friend of mine had Powerjokes his whole career for company trucks and beat the living tar out of em. Got a brand new dodge last winter for "makin power" cuz he heard you can put a lot more power in Cummins without breaking them. He got it with a 6speed and traded it in this summer for a brand new 3500 D-max. I couldnt believe it. All of his trucks he orders the most expensive banks kit, wheels and tires, lift kit, etc. He said the Dodge was just a poorly built truck all except the motor. I am eager to see how the D-max or Chevy in general holds up to his abuse. The first weekend he snapped a front CV shaft!
