I have read that many of you have replaced your stock muffler with a straight muffler (MBRP, Magnaflow, etc.). I see adapters that will convert the 4" inlet/outlet to 3.5 so that is not a problem.

What I don't know is due to the offset of the stock pipes, how do get the straight muffler to work? Do you have a have a muffler shop fabricate an "offset adapter" of some type? Can you buy something like that?

Thanks for any info.

I bought a muffler replacement pipe off of eBay from a place called Husker High Performance. It is designed to fit all of the Dmax trucks, LB7 or LLY. The pipe is available in 3.5" or 4". On eBay, it was $50. Seems expensive for a piece of pipe, but I like what it did for my truck so it was worth the money. It has offset ends, 3.5" if I remember correctly. When taking it out of the box, I did not think that it would work, because the ends did not look to be offset as much as the muffler. However, you can adjust the position of the pipes coming into and out of the straight pipe it fit it nicely. Once you get it all lined up the way you want, snug up the muffler clamps on the straight pipe. I am not sure if a truly straight pipe would work due to the offset of the inlet and outlet, though. Many of the aftermarket systems on here have a mufflers with no offset between the inlet and outlet, so for these guys, a straight piece of 4" pipe will work in place of the muffler.

I just cut out the OEM offset muffler and then fit up the Magnaflow with two 3-1/2 x 4 adapters into the factory pipes. Due to no offset, the Magnaflow angled upward towards the rear and more closely followed the frame rail angle.

Idle_Chatter,

I assume that is the MagnaFlow 7" round diesel muffler that you are using in the pic. But what lenght did you go with? And if you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay for it?

Also how does it sound, and is it loud? Is there much resonance or noise in the cab? I assume that the rest of your exhaust (besides muffler) is stock.

Thanks

is there anything to be gained from running a straight pipe rather than a muffler. I have a full 4" magnaflow exhaust with the big ol muffler on it and it sounds great - but my question would be what amount if any gains would i get from removing the muffler and replacing with a straight pipe ??? thanks

I bought mine on the internet from www.henschelandsons.com (http://www.henschelandsons.com) in Connellsville,PA. The muffler was the Magnaflow 14771 - $149.42, the adapters were 15441 - $22.33 each. I bought 4" band clamps from a local International truck parts supplier. The job wasn't so tough, I did it in my driveway without even jacking the truck. I cut the stock muffler outlet pipe as close to the muffler as possible with a chain cutter. This allowed me to get the muffler and inlet pipe out, as well as the tailpipe. I then cut off the stock inlet as close to the muffler as possible. This left "stubs" of stock pipe inside the factory hangers. A trial fit of the muffler and clamps indicated that the adapter/muffler combo was a bit too long for the gap vacated by the stock muffler, so I trimmed about 1" off the Magnaflow inlet and outlet and the same off the 3-1/2" sections of the adapters. The stubs were also oval due to both of them being in bends in the factory install. I rounded them back out for a better fit to the adapters with a 3-1/2" pipe expander tool. I then clamped the adapters to the Magnaflow and fit the three pieces back up under the truck. When I got it where I wanted it - in the factory hangers and the tip of the tailpipe supported on a floor jack, I tack welded the 3-1/2" end of the adapters to the stock pipes. Then I released the band clamps, brought out the three pieces, full welded the adapters to the pipes and put everything back. Whole job took about 4 hours.
