: Not happy with magnaflow
kb66062 11-12-2004, 02:13 AM I have the 4" magnaflow system from the4 bolt collector back. Mine does not have a converter on it. When I get on it, it sounds like an old truck with glass packs. It doesn't even sound like a diesel anymore.
Is there any other exhaust out there that sounds good. I'd really like something that sounds like a big rig if thats possible. Also wondered if the banks system sounded better maybe I could just buy the mufler and swap for the magnaflow muffler. Any thoughts?
Thanks

hdd-max 11-12-2004, 09:08 AM I have heard several exhaust systems and they all sounded pretty much the same when they were getting on it. The only difference i heard was the loudness. I think that may be the nature of the beast being a v8 diesel. If there is something out there that someone nows about i'm sure they will chime in....The dodge can have the big rig sound IMO because of the straight 6 but the v8 just have a different sound......IMHO
hdd-max 11-12-2004, 09:11 AM By the way i to have the magnaflow..... I think it sounds good.....really sounds good when you are standing outside whatching your old lady whip up on the hemi's and stangs at the track http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley32.gif
motocopter 11-12-2004, 09:23 AM Ours is the sound of a single exhuast V-8. I believe it is what it is.
These trucks have a very distinctive sound from their turbo inline 6. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif

BukWild 11-12-2004, 09:50 AM I have the Magnaflow also and love it. Mine sounds nothing like a glasspack, just a low rumble.

kb66062 11-12-2004, 11:05 AM Buk, does yours have a converter on it? Mine has low rumble and sounds good at idle, but anytime you put your foot in it, sounds like a 85' chevy with glass packs.
It's not just me either. I have several friends with duramax's also that have heard mine and don't like it either.
Does anyone know if the banks sounds any different or are they all about the same.
BukWild 11-12-2004, 11:08 AM No converter on mine. Even my wife likes the sound, not to loud when you get on it, but you know it's there.
Scotty Seelen 11-12-2004, 11:14 AM I've got the Banks, and I really like the sound. It's authoritive buy civil-not too loud. To be honest, I really haven't heard that many other aftermarket exhausts, so I'm not the expert here.
Bodysurfer 11-12-2004, 02:07 PM I got Banks...best!
tbone1227 11-12-2004, 04:41 PM just a guess here, but it might have something to do with the edge setup youre running. i noticed that on mine with just edge i would get that sound as well, even more with no cat, i since have put the cat back on and run either a tts tune or edge stacked with power pup, and i dont get that noise. have you tried running the truck without the edge ?
JohnnyO 11-12-2004, 06:13 PM I have the Dynomax exhaust. Sounds real good.
Dustin 11-27-2004, 10:37 PM I have a 2002 Duramax Diesel with the MagnaFlow Performance 4-inch stainless steel exhaust system and it sounds great. I also don't have a cat converter. Did you get the turbo flow muffler with it. It makes a difference
chevy_9465 11-27-2004, 11:07 PM what ever happened to god ole straight pipes:confused: no muffler of any kind or cat:ro)
jesshd 11-27-2004, 11:31 PM They all sound about the same to some degree. The only real difference seems to be in the loudness. The less restriction, the more rumble and resonance you will get. Mufflers can and will affect the "tune" of the system. Most, if not all, of the less restricted exhausts that I have heard on any of the V8 diesels sound about the same. At least they don't sound like a dump truck with an open exhaust, ala Cummins :-)
