: Recommendation for Programmer
VFRRider 11-11-2004, 05:55 PM Fellow Gasdudes,
My bro inlaw is recieving his 05 2500 CC SB 8.1 w/allison next week. I'll be hooking him up with H2 takeoffs and moving his bumper for him, what I need is a recommendation for a programmer. I know programmers for gassers are considered money for little gain, but really want it for speedo reprogrammer and a few extra hp wont hurt. Figured I'd ask those in the know. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Mike
Tierod 11-11-2004, 07:48 PM Try a Nelson, westers, or pcmforless mail order ecu there a bit more but they are allot better than something like a HPPIII. Try www.tbryne.com (http://www.tbryne.com) always has good stuff.

VFRRider 11-11-2004, 09:22 PM One more thing, any recommendations for an aftermarket muffler? Looking for good sound, not interested in entire exhaust, just want nice rumble. Gonna scrap the stock shocks and put rancho's on all corners, other than that it will remain stock.
8100hammer 11-12-2004, 07:04 AM Flowmaster make a direct replacement for 8.1 , also gibson has some nice kits.
JimWilson 11-18-2004, 03:11 PM The only one I have any direct knowledge of is the Westers PCM, because
that's what I have in my truck. Personally, I don't think it was worth
the money because it did very little for my truck. I can't really help
you with the others -- I've never used them myself.
8100hammer 11-18-2004, 05:16 PM Then send it back and get it retuned, On mine westers alone I pick-up a
1sec on the 1/4mile. Had to do this serveral times when cam was being
retuned by westers. He will keep working on it until your happy
with it.
Trust me HpIII does even less!!!
Which motor do you have?
TxDoc 11-18-2004, 11:28 PM I got the 89/93 tune from Lyndon at Wester's and only wished I had done it sooner. The truck accelerated much faster and my gas mileage went up almost just over 3 mpg in all city driving.
Simple install and can be reversed quickly. You can talk to Lyndon directly and tell him want you think you want and he can help you decide on what is best for your needs. Very nice to deal with and prompt with refund for core exchanges.
I bought a used core and kept my original. Once you pay for a tune, you can send your PCM back for changes for the vehicle it was in, or for a new vehicle you buy later.
-----------------
Here are a few other benefits of the Wester's -
30 day free trial, you don’t like it, they’ll either modify it, or send it back and owe nothing!
Lifetime warranty (no cost or fees)
Lifetime updates for all future mods ($45 shipping and handling fee)
Lifetime full price paid credit toward your next custom tune for your next vehicle ($45 shipping and handling fee) - VERY good benefit http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/images/smilies/LS1Tech/gr_stretch.gif
Standard with all performance tunes -
Complete reflash of the PCM to your VIN, with all factory updates.
Dyno developed performance tune optimized for your exact engine and transmission combination.
Raised and optimized shift points
Firm, but not harsh shifts
Elimination of all torque management that can be safely removed
*
Some of the more common modifications to ask for -
Raising the top speed limiter to any speed you specify
Specifying the exact shift points you want in every gear
Firmer (or softer) shifts.
Specific tuning for your modifications, like larger than stock tires, gear ratio change, aftermarket MAF sensor, supercharger, headers, cam change, engine modifications, etc.
Good luck with whatever you choose to go with. I think you will be happy with a PCM tune, the cost, the results and the ease of install.
JimWilson 11-23-2004, 04:31 PM Then send it back and get it retuned Would that I could, but I'm long since out of the "warranty" period.
He will keep working on it until your happy with it. If that were true for all of us I wouldn't feel the way I do about the product.
Chevyfreek 11-23-2004, 05:10 PM My Westers works great and I am more than happy with it. A worth while investment IMO. The factory tuning is just that, very factory! Perfromance is not what GM tunes these trucks for! Westers can tune for your gear and tire size changes as well as improving the shifting performance of the trans...
Congrats to your brother-in-law on the new truck...
8100hammer 11-24-2004, 05:48 AM Jim Wilson: if still unhappy, Buy hptuners, get reflash from the dealer and tune it yourself, this is where I am going this way soon, mods are comings, plus want to able to tune for nitrous. Or could try Nelson performance, most people think he tunes more for all out performance, some people think that wester leaves a little on the table. but just opinons
Silvertwinkie 01-15-2005, 05:56 PM I'd second PCMforless. Byran Herter is a stand up guy. Repsonds to all questions and really gives you a great bang for your buck.
I've used his programs now for over 2 years in various OBD1 and OBD2 applications. I'm eventually gonna have him program our '04 6.0L Burb.
haneym 01-17-2005, 03:40 PM Flowmaster make a direct replacement for 8.1 , also gibson has some nice kits.
does the 8.1 have same exhaust as 6.0? i have yet to see an aftermarket dual in, single out muffler (only looked in summit/jegs, not REAL hard since i dont have the money right now). all ive seen is single in/out and single in/dual out.
DEWFPO 01-31-2005, 08:17 PM I haven't found any dual 3" IN/dual 3" OUT for the 8.1 anywhere yet.
