: tow haul switch?
07 dually 08-22-2007, 07:01 PM tow haul switch what does it do for you??
i tow about 7.5 ton of hay on a 24ft goose neck tri axle trailer is about 5600# empty (would not want to pull much more.very heavy) tryed the tow haul switch a few times going down hills only all it did was act like an engine brake that always got the rpm's way to high ??
p3 brake control
thanks mike
Nathan Muthler 08-22-2007, 07:09 PM The switch when turned on will let the trans. hold out its shift longer when accelerating also. It keeps it in gear longer. The downshifting when going down hills is also activated just by putting your foot on the brakes and letting off going down a hill. If you want it to stop just tap the gas pedal and it will stop till you push the brake pedal again. I use mine in my dually when towing my farm tractors up hills. It keeps the tranny from shifting into the next gear longer and makes it easier to tow heavy loads up hills.
Lennox69 08-22-2007, 07:10 PM tow and haul switch activates the torque converter (locks it) it prvent gear hunting to protect clutches from been burnt due to high gear and low rps. also keeps higher flow to prevent excesive heat in the clutch packs.
blksmok 08-22-2007, 07:13 PM T/H is your friend. Use it when towing heavy. It'll save you unnecessary wear on the tranny. And it'll save your brakes going down serious grades.
OCDUNE 08-22-2007, 07:16 PM Totally fine to let the motor spin as high as it wants on engine braking, the system is just doing what it was designed to do. Besides it is better than wear and tear on the brakes.
thejdman04 08-22-2007, 07:38 PM leave it in tow haul and let it rev, its waht it is supposed to do.
Sparky8370 08-22-2007, 07:59 PM Does tow haul de-tune the motor in the higher gears at highway speeds? I've noticed while pulling my buddy's larger skid steer, that if I take it out of tow haul on the highway and mat it, it seems to pick up and go better than with it on.
I've been cautious about doing it. I def like it better at the slower speeds. The only thing I don't like about it, is when it lets go just when you get to the stop sign so you have to hit the brakes a little harder.

True, it is doing what it's designed to do. However, I'd rather destroy a set of brakes than an engine.
Durallymax 08-22-2007, 10:09 PM Ive never seen tow haul spin a motor past 4,000RPM. This is totally fine.
It is your friend. It keeps tranny temps down by keeping the convertor locked as much as possible and also delayying the shift points. YOU WANT THE TC LOCKED WHEN TOWING. Belive me IT SAVES.
I find myself always using it even when not loaded to take advantage of the grade braking. It saves brakes and im just too lazy to hit the brakes.
blizzardplowman 08-22-2007, 10:51 PM T/H is your friend, I have not hurt either one of my rigs, and I know weight. I tip the scales @ 24k GCW with the toy hauler and up to 32k with the GN. It is smater than you and won't over rev and hurt the motor, I've see 4400 on a steep down hill...
Fuelman 08-22-2007, 10:54 PM Last weekend I was going down a steep grade with a load and trailer, hit the brakes once and the trans shifted, bringing the RPMs to 3400.I hit the brakes again and the trans shifted again bringing the RPMs to 4300,they stayed there for about a mile. The engine seemed to handle it with out any probs.
ar077 08-23-2007, 07:50 AM I hadn't thought of it but it sounds like T/H equates to better performance whether or not there's a load behind the truck. Is there a downside to leaving it in T/H all the time other than possibly reducing fuel economy?
saratoga 08-23-2007, 08:03 AM The engine makes one hell of a noise at 4000 rpm, but no you won't hurt anything. It will upshift if the engine speed gets too high. The transmission is smarter than you think... let it do what it was designed to do.
ice man 08-23-2007, 10:00 AM I drive with the tow/haul on 95% of the time, the only time I don't drive with it is when i forget to turn it on  . I wish there was a way to leave it on and not have turn it on everytime.
I have seen very little decrease in mileage vs non tow/haul, plus it really save the wear and tear on brakes, and I feel it's a more comfortable drive.
Highest I've seen is 4100 rpm, and it scared the H*ll out of me the first time. But it also helped identify my faulty P/S pump:D .
Dawg2500HD 08-23-2007, 10:04 AM I didn't know the t/c is locked in tow/haul. Is this why the shifts are so firm and crisp?
dinorex44 08-23-2007, 10:07 AM The enhanced engine grade braking in tow/haul mode will enable you to reduce the use of your breaks on downhill, which will keep them cooler and prevent brake fade. To me this is even more important than reducing wear on the brakes.
Lennox69 08-23-2007, 10:46 AM the over spun rpms was a concern on the lb7, alot of people complain to gm and that why they raised the red zone on your tech....engine over 5000 rpms is fine when downgrading!!!
gmcya 08-23-2007, 11:07 AM T/H is like a bar fly at 2 am.....hit it and forget it!
