I replaced my oem cover with a Mag-Hytec unit primarily for looks. It does have some nice features . . . o-ring seal, magnetic dipstick, increased fluid capacity, etc.

I have used mag hytec on previous vehicles and have nothing but great things to say about them. As mentioned above the o-ring, inc. fluid cap, and dipstick. all which are pluses compared to the stock stuff

It's got its nice features, but looks were my main motivation. They look good.

The non-powder coated covers will lower you rear end temps. I put a nice one on the Frod powerjoke I used to drive, it was ribbed aluminum. The powder coated ones hold heat, but "look" good.

I have been reading about how the Mag Hytec trans pans don't help out with the temps. Has any one actually put a gauge in the stock cover and then into a Mag Hytec cover to compare if it makes a difference?
Also any more opinions on the PML covers from what I can see in the pictures they look well built and are a bit less money.

How much are the PML covers?

I have a Mag-Hytec and a Diff temp guage but have no comparisons with the stock cover :o: Unloaded running on the Hwy i see temps around 120-150* depending on ambient temp.....Towing 15k gets up to 190-210 again depending on abient temps, lenght and % of grade.

The only advantage I can see with the trans pan (other than looks & more fluid cap) is that it only takes longer to reach the exact same temps as the stock pan....... I think its safe to assume the same can be said for the diff as well. Someone thats had a dif temp guage in both the stock cover and a Mag-Hytec could make a certain judgement.

Someone out there must have tried it with a temp gauge in the stock cover?

I am not sure yet on the PLM prices I am waiting on info to be set up as a dealer with them. I can get the Mag Hytec now but I am questioning the powder coating not transferring heat. I am not doing it for the looks as much as the functionality since my truck is stock hight.

We did it on the Ford diesel site back 2 years ago after the same question came up. The all aluminum cover was, IIRC, about 20-30 degrees cooler than stock. The powder coated covers actually got warmer than stock.

Hey, does anyone know if the Mag-Hytec cover affects or comes in contact with the spare tire. My spare is a 235/85. Thanks.

It will be very close if not touching. I just pulled my spare back away from the diff and put a bungy cord to hold it there.

How much difference in temp would powder coating make? Would it be worth it for protection of the metal over heat dissipation?

I was gonna do that, but didn't have the free time to do it before the new Mag-Hytec dif cover arrives from Xtreme Diesel. I wanted to compare temps between the stock cover and the new one. Anyway, I cant tell ya cuz the new Mag-Hytec cover arrived today! Woo-Hoo

Whaddaya mean you can't do it? Can't you just drive 6 months and 3000 miles with different conditions and loads while getting under and out with a notebook and thermometer to record the data BEFORE you put on the new Mag-Hytec? (Of course, you'll have to repeat all that with the new cover after you install it). I don't think you are fully contributing to your "Diesel Community" here!:D ;)

Sorry I did not say "cant" do it. I say I did not have the free time to do this test before the new on goes on.
Since you mentioned this though I will make sure before I put the new cover on to drill and tap the stocker and compare.
I will record the data and post them up here. Thanks for the good advise...:D :)
