I took my 2500HD in this morning to get the steering rattle fixed for
the fourth time. I looked over the sheet real carefully to make
sure the description was accruate, something I learned here. As I
was walking away from the counter, after I signed the form, the number
25,000 caught my eye on the form. I think it was in the mileage
box. I figured I must have misread the number because my mileage
is over 31,000 miles. The last time I took it in, the mileage was
around 24,000 miles. I didn't think anything about it until I sat
down to wait for a ride.



Is there any reason the service man would have purposefullly entered
the incorrect mileage? I saw him go out to the car and turn it on
to get the actual number. Would there be some motive with regard
to original warranty (36,000 miles) or anything else? I may just
be paranoid or have read the number wrong. Still, I'd like to
know what to do today if I pick it up and the mileage is listed as
25,000 miles and not the actual number.

Seems odd, but I see no goal from them or you to have written down the incorrect mileage . . .

I was thinking in terms of multiple fixes and my mileage getting close
to the limit on original warranty. If I get something fixed for
the n-th time right before the warranty is over, does the warranty on
that item extend beyond the original warranty? If it does, then I
could see the reason for mis-reporting the number. I could come
back at 38,000 miles and still have the problem but be denied any sort
of claim because the paperwork states that I added 13,000 miles since
the repair when I actually only added 7,000 miles. If there is no
sort of "extended" warranty on repairs made close to the end of the
warranty, then yes, I also see no reason to write down the incorrect
number. I'm just hoping I misread the form and all will be well
when I pick it up. I do tend to overreact - can you tell?

With most auto manufactures when you have a repair done under warranty, say at 30k, and that part fails again when you are out of warrany at 38k, even though it has only been 8k miles, the warranty on that part expires with the rest at 36k.

How would they change the mileage? Is it that easy to change. I always assumed it was stored in a chip behind the instrument cluster like my wifes Z24. If it is that easy to tamper with I would think that there would be alot of odometers being rolled back.

I asked the guys at Brown & Brown Chevrolet in Mesa about that a few years ago. When a part is replaced. The part has a 1 year warranty. If it fails within that time, but the mileage has exceeded your manufacturer warranty, it is still under warranty. If it replaced again another 1 year. That was a few years ago, but that is what the service advisor had told me.Except for batteries.

I was told when my engine went that I had the equivalent of a 111,000 mile warranty on my diesel now because the new engine was warrantied for 100,000 miles from the time of installation. They did a whole replacement, flew in from flint, MI. Contemplated driving by and eyeballing the plant.. they have to have tours and stuff... maybe I can drop a list of stuff on the truck designers lap from here so they can "refine" what they already made damn good and the best to me, into plain 'the best'

Being the oriiginal doubting thomas, I would say go back and get them to put the correct mileage in.

The reason: the new parts carry a 1 year/12000 mile warranty. If they put in 25K, and you are at 31, they just took 6K miles off your warranty.

Just buy a new gage cluster - 0 miles! The mileage is stored in the cluster I believe.

Is it possible that the mileage could also be stored in the computer for the allison or engine also. If someone would try to switch the cluster and the numbers didn't jive when they hook up the diagnostic computer you would be in trouble. If it is as easy as changing the cluster you would think there would be a bunch of people extending their warranty.
