: Chevy burpin black smoke
Helmet 11-10-2004, 10:37 AM Hay, I'm new here, and I have a problem with my 6.5TD, so I hoped that some of you might be able to help me.
This is the problem: when the engine is warm/hot, and isn't making alot of RPM (but the truck is moving), when I put my foot down, there are huge clouds of black soot coming out of the exhaust.
This doesn't happen when cold, and also not when launching from standstill.
I've been reading some of the messeges, and my guess its the wastegate, but I'm not sure, and would like confirmation.
If it is the wastegate, what should I do? Would buying the Boostcontroller from Heath be an improvement?
Thanks in advance!
quantum mechanic 11-10-2004, 10:50 AM Helmet,
Wecome to the Place! And from so far away.
Is your's EGR controlled or do you have only the WG solenoid on the vacuum line?
Please update your userprofile with the year, "F" or "S" engine(8th vin # is the enginecode) tranny, milage and modifications or options.
On Edit: We write it "hey" for hello because hay is for horses and cows.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/hihi.gif lolhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gifhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley1.gif( Sorry, couldn't help myself. That's somthing kids would say when I was in grade school but it went hay is for horses and cows and not pigs like you, but i digress)Edited by: quantum mechanic
bowtie 11-10-2004, 11:12 AM LOL QM
I would put my money, and it don't cost much, on the WG solenoid or control valve. Yours sounds like what my was doing and that was my 25.00 fix. running great now.
Oh BTW Welcome
Helmet 11-10-2004, 11:25 AM Whoops on the 'hay' part I knew I was spelling it wronghttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley5.gif
Anyway my truck is a late '97, auto, milage about 100k, a different exhaust with muffler, but no cat (downpipe is the same though).
Once I discover what EGR and WG solenoid means, I'll post it. I also have to check on the VIN code, but currently I can't reach my truck (and its getting dark over here!)
Also, uh, I'm a pighttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley19.gif ah you hurt my feelings j/khttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif
quantum mechanic 11-10-2004, 11:54 AM EGR would be under the turbo cover. The solenoid are over the driver'side valve cover/intake on a bracket.
CanadianRigger 11-10-2004, 12:10 PM As they say a picture is worth a thousand words.

This picture is from a 95, yours probably only has one selonoid. The big hole in the middle of the picture is where the upper intake was and sitting ontop of that would be the EGR valve if you have one. This truck has 3 selonoids, the one closest to the front of the engine controls the operation of the wastegate on the turbo charger.
Helmet 11-10-2004, 01:29 PM Thanks for that picture, Rigger, its quite handy!http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley1.gif
I'm not going to be able to do anything tonight anymore, but I'll keep you all up to date in the progres (or lack there off LOL)
Cheers, Helmet
MTTwister 11-10-2004, 03:23 PM With no EGR you'll only have the one solenoid for the wastgate, and the top intake won't have a big honking EGR valve stuck in it. If it's there, they can be prone to sticking, and you can search for cures ot that problem - disabling, etc until it get's light out. :) Good Luck! Edited by: MTTwister
Helmet 11-11-2004, 09:19 AM Update!
So I looked around under the hood and took the turbo cover of.
Seems like there's three selonoids and an EGR valve.
(Hope this works)

Looks clean huh? What should I do now?
quantum mechanic 11-11-2004, 09:06 PM The L56 LD EGR controlled engine uses the vacuum to open the ERG which then controls wg solenoid. The usual cause is a lack of vacuum from the pump, cracks, leaks, bad rubberboots on the vac lines and on/between the solenoids causing lack of vacuum to be read by baro (on firewall connected to EGR by rubber hose) Or the solenoids.
Start by checking the vacuum with a guage. At idle it should read ~25" hg off the pump, ~15" to the turbo and~5" to the EGR.
Emissioms in your area are unknown to us but here, we advise diabling all egr function if permissible.
