Can someone direct me to some performance mods for non-PCM controled
6.5 turbos? The 6.5 in my 87 has no computer of any kind and I
cant really find any information tha applies to it. Ive already
got 3" straight pipes and dont know what else I can do. Any info
is appreciated. Thanks.

You must have a '93-'94 motor in the '87 truck? If you do these are first generation. These are much more reliable as well.
Try bumping the IP oh so slightly to the driver's side to change the timing. One mm=one degree change. You might notice more "diesel rattle" on start up. It should start a little easier as well. An Injector swap might not hurt if they are due? After about 75K they really don't owe you much.
What kind of waste gate control do you have at the Turbo? The aftermarket guys have some nice adjustable systems.

Ok.. well.. since it looks like someone actually knows there stuff maybe I'll tell you all my problems :D
This truck smokes like an old 2 stroke on start up, especially when its
cold out. If I start my truck in 40 degree weather I can even see
out the window to back up for 5mins. I know diesels smoke a bit..
but this is ALOT. After 2-3mins of playing with the throttle the
smoke will go away and it will finally idle. Its pretty good out
on the highway except for a noticable power loss.
The motor has over 100k and I imagine all parts are original.
People suggested IP, injectors, and glowplugs. Any way to test
these? Thanks

well for starters check the codes, also pull the glow plugs and check them out.

see first post.
no pcm
no codes.

You'd do much better on the 6.2L forum - all the mechanical pump issues are addressed there.
HPCA and sending unit, Fast Idle Solenoid, standard glow controller and plugs, etc.
Only a couple silly millimeters bore difference in the 6.2\6.5.
Read the FAQ's, do SEARCHes on your subject(s)...........Edited by: gmctd

Check your glowplugs first.

are you sure its a 6.5? I know its a minimal difference from the 6.2, but the 6.2s were offered with a turbo option for a couple of years, if yours is one it will be easy to tell by the big Banks Turbo boost plenum on top of the intake, otherwise, it will have the standard 6.5 intake tube.
Glowplugs are a good place to start, all you need to check for continuity, unplug and test individually.
Advance Injection Pump timing, There should be a line scribed on the pump housing and timing cover and they should be inline, loosen the pump and rock it over about a lines width to driver's side. This will compensate pump timing for a worn timing chain.
Verify HPCA solenoid operation, start truck cold, unplug the HPCA solenoid wire on the side of the top cover and you should be able to hear the engine get noticeably quieter.
Verify Cold Fast Idle solenoid operation, same idea, unplug it, idle speed should slow, if both are INOP then you probably have a bad temp sender.
Once you've done all this, if you haven't made a difference so far, then you need a set of injectors. If you don't have a Hard Start Hot problem or white smoke after engine is warm, then I say your pump is probably still OK.

he did say it smoked warm as well. Could this be a scoured advance piston?

from what I read, it smokes for the first 5 min, but your right, a worn advance piston would make it smoke white when the engine is hot.

Hey,
A clogged fuel supply will make it white smoke. I figured it must be the inability of the pump to advance without an adaquite supply to inject. I had a slow ride home one day not long after I replace my filter. I detached the LP and blow compressed air through the fuel system. When I drained the "T" I saw a bunch of particles come out and I had drained it when I installed the filter.
