Does anyone have a problem when putting a cold allison w/ sun3 in drive when it is cool out?? By cool I mean only about 30-50 degrees. When I go into drive in the morning it slams into gear!! I mean really hits hard!! I back out of the drive way (no prob in R) and put it in drive, bamm!!! I don't mind, but since it get around -10F or cooler, I am concerned about hurting driveline parts at that temperature.

Anyone else have this problem??

Mine is more firm when cold......I let it idel for a few though and it hasnt gotten really cold. No slam experienced yet or anything I would call violent but engaugement is more firm.

I haven't experienced anything different with the cooler temps lately. My truck has always shifted harsher when it is cold since the upgrade. Once it warms up does it "mello" out? What type of trans fluid are you running? I think that would have a bigger effect on cold weather performance than anything.

Mine does it to now with the colder temps, in forward or reverse but I find if I keep my foot on the brake pedal with some moderate force and make sure I'm not rolling before I shift in the opposite direction it's not as bad.

Mine only does this hard hit on the initial placement into drive and only once when the motor is cold. If you put it in drive it hits hard, go back to N and then right back to drive and you get a smooth engagement?? Go figurehttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley5.gif After the truck sits all day it does the same thing when I start to go home. I don't really mind this at all, as long as my u-joints don't mindhttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley5.gif

Yep

I have the exact same issue. Were talking hard too...you can turn the tires if your rolling back a little when you drop it into Drive. First time it happend I thought I backed into something.....it's a neck snapper.

Been like that for a couple years.....I take it easy first thing in the morning, stand on the brakes a little harder than normal and put my head on the headrest.

Other than being annoying it doesn't cause a problem. Those early morning shifts are fast.

I've noticed the same deal...now that it's colder out. By letting it idle a little longer...and I pause in neutral for a couple of seconds when going from reverse to drive...it really seems better. At first I thought I was going to pop out my fillings...talk about firm!

Mine does the same thing. Wish it would shift like that all the time instead of the slip shift I'm experiencing. The firm shift beats a delayed shift!!

mine will do it from time to time, not all the offen. sometimes i do notice that when i start it up, hot or cold, that there is about a ten to 15 minute time where the shifts are a little firmer, but it did the same thing with the stock tranny as well. another thing is when you put it in "n" when its still moving a little and come to a stop she really bangs then too. my truck at work i plow with has an older allison in it and it does the same thing. its an '89 international
