<DIV>He has a 2004 GMC Crew Cab Duramax ...just had it 6" lift installed, new tires, wheels, running boards, etc.. He hit a 3-point buck on his way home from work tonight. Mangled the front end, both fenders, and driver's door. He hit it about 60 mph ...went under truck and came up on driver's side smashing new running boards and drivers side door. Tires rubbing, has to hang onto steering wheel to keep it straight ...screwed up his truck big time. he said if it weren't for the 6" lift kit it would have probably come thru the windshield. White truck now covered in blood/guts. Bambi 1 Duramax 0</DIV>

I would say Duramax/Brother 1 and Bambi 0... Your brother is still alive and unhurt, truck is fixable or replaceable, brothers aren't...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif

A big heavy aftermarket front deer killin bumper should be his next mod.

That is so true. I was obviously looking at it from the materialistic point of view http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley5.gif His pride is the only thing hurt.

Deer whistles? I don't think so, he probably hit the only deer within a 200 mile radius. Just his luck lately ...he is probably in the running to be ProblemChild2 on this forum.

His injectors will probably go next ...then dealer will say deer hair contaminated the fuel.Edited by: tophog

Your right!! I went out to Sturgis,SD the last two years and I was the only 18 wheeler without one. They run them to save the radiator.

One has to wonder ...perhaps those deer whistles are more like deer "calls" http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/hihi.gif

One would have to ask the deer ...but by that time it's a little too late.Edited by: tophog

Another question. Did the air bags deploy?? I think there was another post in the last week or two about a D/Max that had major front end damage and the air bags did not deploy. I know there is a 2500HD gasser sitting down the street at the body shop that the front is destroyed and I stopped to look at it and the air bags never deployed on it either (body shop owner said owner is in really bad shape--still may not make it). Beginning to wonder what you have to hit to get them to deploy and if this is a problem with GM?

Deer whistles DO NOT WORK.

THAT is a scientifically proven fact. Gives some folks a false sense of security. I run a deer gauntlet every morning and night. Have hit 3 deer in 9 years, to many near misses to count. See them on the side of the road every day. Doesn't make for a relaxing 90 mile commutehttp://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley5.gif

Amen. Vendors at the motorcycle rallies I used to attend all the time 15 years ago swore by them. I had a set on my bike too at one time. But I always rode the bike like there was lots of deer standing only a few feet back from the road. Now I've gotten so I don't ride at night any more than I have to. Just too many deer out there. I don't think people hunt like they used to and with the urban sprawl, civilization has encroached too much on nature.

We live in heavy deer country here in Michigan. In our area where there is still farmed ground, there is plenty of food and cover for them to thrive. My wife nearly got one Friday night with the Tahoe coming home from town and later that night I nearly got one with the HD coming back from a friends house.

If you don't want to see any deer, just have a gun in the truck. I have never seen a deer when I actually have a gun.http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif

Stupid rats with horns I ran over a fawn bedded down in tall grass earlier this year with one of my mowers. Here in Jersey there is a dead one every quarter mile on every highway.

Deer whistles don't work, but they do spendid job of transferring money from your wallet to the merchant.

Whistling at deer doesn't scare them unless you hunting. Cursing
vigorously and kicking the tires might scare 'em off but that doesn't
do a damn bit of good either because you only do so after you get the
deer stuck in the radiator.

(still P.O.'d about the one I squashed last Thanksgiving)

If the occupants walked away with little or no damage, did the airbags really need to deploy? They will deploy if the crash is severe enough and the bags are warranted.

Sorry to hear about your Brothers' misfortune Jeff. I have had a few close calls myself, and I know on a couple of occasions JK's harness saved me from disaster. Hmmmm.....a new reason to justify a lift.

Thanks. He took the truck in for the estimate today ... $4400 damage. I guess he's going to drop it off soon for the work to be done. Suppose to take about a week.

Less rock chips with a lift also http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif

I wacked a buck with my 98 half-ton at about 60MPH - took out the entire front end, crumpled the right fender, pushed the bumper back against the RF tire. Also took out the radiator, trans cooler and engine oil cooler. All I could do is stand there and watch my truck bleed to death.

Bags did not deploy, didn't really slow the truck down much at all, just felt like a bump....an expensive bump though...over $4K in repairs and out of commission for two weeks.

Target-rich environment here in West MI!

Anyone I have asked about the deer whistles have said they have never seen a deer (with them on)

Comming through Indiana, the end of June at night....saw lots of deer
just off the road. Wife was driving..... So I was reaching
over, leaning on the horn. Ofcourse she only see's whats directly
in front of the lights. Decided I wanted a set of whistles.

You might want to be careful with diesels and deer they seem to like the sound. On more than one occasions I had the sit and watch me run my Kubota when York raking.

We have them on all our semi-tractors and believe what I say......They do not work.Lost count how many times we have dug parts of bambi out of springs and axles with the intact deer whistles smiling brightly from the sides of the hood.Like others have said I think they are a Deer call!

Lots of deer here in GA, and over the years I have hit 3 with glancing blows. Been very lucky, worst damage I've had was a side marker light on a '79 Mustang. Most people here run the whistles, but dunno if they really help or not. Best to carry comprehensive insurance even if it's an old beater that you have no collision coverage on.

I belong to the local gun club and shoot skeet often. If we are shooting right around twilight, it's common to see them grazing like cows out at the perimeters of the skeet fields while we are banging away with shotguns only 50-100 yards away!

The only warning whistle the deer get around here is the wind throught the expanded metal mesh on my bumper! http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif

I built a grille guard for my '91 last year before we went to Alaska w/our 5th wheel. It has 1 1/2" tubing around the perimeter of the nose, and is completely covered with expanded metal, including the headlights. I did it mainly because I had heard about the damage from gravel on the roads up there. I ended up hitting a deer in Alberta going 65 (I was going 65, not the deer) and never bent anything. Paid for itself in a split second. Plus, the road we were on was desolate with a border crossing that closed at 9 pm. We would have been stranded there until the next day before we could have even contacted anyone.

Best deer deterrant I've ever come across was a push bumper like the boys have mentioned, but the second in line for me is when I straight piped and stacked my D-max. Nice rumble going down the high-way. Haven't even come close to hitting one since I did the conversion. But then of course I've got enough light comming off my truck to make any night into virtual daylight, so.........

Good friend of mine owns a body shop here locally.

He says he gets cars with whistles on them all the time that have hit a deer.

Back when I was in school and just scrapin' to get by, we were behind a fella who hit a big one. It was still kickin' on the side of the road so we went to a neighbor's house, borrowed his gun and said goodnight to Buckey. Figurin' that fresh venison...and it bein' free to boot, wasn't such a bad thing, we hauled it off to the butcher. Let me tell 'ya, if the opportunity ever presents itself...pass. Adrenalin does some pretty nasty things to fresh meat. I needed my Stihl to get thru the first steak. Tossed the rest.
