The army dumped its electric warn winches because of many problems.
http://www.milemarker.com/army.html
Warn tests it winches at 40% incline, mile at 60%. A warn winch cant
run 3 feet at max pull without burning up the motor. Hydraulic can run
all day.
Can our power steering pump put out 1500 psi?
Does the fluid get hot?
Whats the general 411 on mile marker hydraulic winches.
I wont be driving in deep water and killing the engine so thats not an issue.

One reason I am not considering a hydraulic winch is because I just
really wonder how long the PS pump would hold up. I may be
wrong, but it is only designed for moving the tires back and forth and
not requiring really a high volume of fluid , at high psi. While
not exactly the same, I know of ranchers who mount bale spears on the
back of their trucks. These systems are supposed to work on the
power steering pumps, but most of the guys end up putting on auxilary
hydraulic pumps.
Sorry I can't give any specifics re: flow rates , psi, duty cycle? etc.

I have been doing some searching for more info. on winches and found
this forum which has some good info. as well as good links. It
seems like some of the serious off-roaders like the hydraulic models,
but I don't think I need something that heavy duty.
But more is always better. http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/smileys/hihi.gif

Not sure how to post a link. If you can't get this to work, try going to 4xforum.co.za/index.html

Why not put an aux pump where the secondary alternator goes, or run one off the allison?

Yes, you can run off the power steering pump BUT
The flow is too low
You have to mod the steering box to do it correctly. Any steering action will kill the available pressure to both winch and steering box, you have to decide which will have priority in the open center system. I would vote for the steering which requires setting up a seprate, valved, return line. Could get ugly. The power brakes use an accumulator to get around this.
Speaking of open center, the winch control valve will have to be open center.
I would go PTO off the Allison.

I've had my warn 9000 for four years now and with five vans and box trucks that I own, they get stuck in mud and snow on job sites alot. I've never had a problem with the winch not performing well, and its saved me thousands in tow fees.

I also have worked my Warn 15,000 to death with no problems. While most of my winching takes place during a 3 month period each year, my winch gets used a lot (I have to replace the cable usually each year when I return) with pulleys pulling extreme loads (trucks out of the ditch) as well as pulling my own D/A across streams and through the Peten mud. No problems, no failures. 30 years ago I had a PTO winch, but it doesn't work unless your engine is running and I winch across deep water several times without a motor running. My warn has been underwater, and still working. Of course, when I crawl back in after getting wet to the middle of my back my interior gets wet, but the truck has always started. The old Warns broke often, but I have not been able to break the 15,000. Of course, there is another trip coming up in a month or so, and I'll try again. Are you sure none of you want me to test drive your vehicles?

What fun is it if you can't run them hard enough to try and break them?):h

Another fan of the 15000 lb Warn winch. I only got the 15000 lb winch because I often need to pull my truck out of the mud but also my 12000-20000 lb trailer as well. These past 2 years were the wettest in my area and the mud I saw was incredible! I used my warn every weekend almost. It never let me down. This past summer I had to go up hill in mud while hooked up to my 12000 lb trailer. The winch saved my ass..It was 3 am and raining hard..I had been working for 4 days straight with little or no sleep and all I wanted was to be out of the woods! Needless to say I was on the Highway soon after the extraction!
I could write a book with my winch stories! I like the Warn winches for what I do. There mounts are heavy duty but they do rust!
I also have a 2500 Warn winch on my Polaris 700 Sportsman!
