: RPM drops when passing, is this normal?

I have noticed that when passing at highway speeds. my 2001 Dmax will shift down into passing gear and instantly hit 2900 to 3000 rpm then backdown to 27 to 2800rpm. From there it will slowly increase in rpm to its limiter as I accelerate.

My concern is when it drops back on the rpm. is this normal or is there a potential problem?

Boom, I notice the same thing, especially when pulling the fiver. I assume it's just the torque converter unlocking when downshifting to 4th, then the converter relocking...hence the rpm's dropping.

In my experience with watching the attitude while driving I would say that you got it right.

The TC probably unlocks then a down shift is commanded, it runs for a little bit and then re-locks the TC and continues to build RPM

Passing gear? Whats that?

When towing up long steep grades it would drop out of OD into 3, scare the dickins out of us then shift into 4th. Some say its normal when in Cruise. The dealer reflashed and doesn't seem to do it anymore ~ will know more when I tow a load again.

Passing gear ~ think my old '47 caddy had that.
