you can only get them through one website, auction style. don't pay more than what you would pay for a good core and try to avoid shipping it. they put them in a steel crate and it weighs a LOT!

I was looking at this website for used military engines. www.dieselfixer.com (http://www.dieselfixer.com/)).

Has anyone bought an engine from them ?

i forgot about folks selling inspected take outs. i thought you meant directly from uncle sam...my bad.

i have not got an engine from them, but that is where i got my hummer headers. tom's a good guy, just a little slow to ship.

the only issue i would have with those motors is that just because the motor has compression and is in working condition when you install it does not mean it will be for long...kinda like a junk yard part...it could be 5 steps from dead. i would rather buy a known good rebuilt from them, or a GM crate.

That is a chance you take with any used engine. The price is substantially less than that of a rebuilt engine for that exact reason. Keep in mind that the same chance exists with a rebuilt or even a new motor. With many rebuilt engines you don't know what exactly was done to them or what the skill of the builder was. It could be a properly built engine or a used motor with new gaskets and bearing inserts.

but, as i am sure you will admit its a much, much lower ratio with a rebuilt.

how many new/crate motors come out bad? i wish we could find actual numbers somewhere? i bet when they do die right away its usually installer error like not priming the oil system...its just easier to say "it was bad in the box" than "i messed up"

Yes, you are correct that rebuilt motors have a lower failure rate, I'm just saying not to rule out a good used engine. I have had good luck with used parts and components and they cost significantly less than rebuilds.

Also, the chances of a freshly rebuilt engine failing depend on the rebuilder and what exactly "rebuilt" means, as I noted earlier.

Thanks for your input guys. I've built a lot of cars & trucks but this is my first diesel. Here is my truck history and current problem.

I have a 1959 Chevy truck cab & short flat bed. First I had it on a 1975 1/2 ton with a 350 engine. Then I went to a 3/4 ton with a 368 Cadillac engine. Now it is mounted on a 1989 1-ton dually frame & running gear. The 89 had a Jasper rebuilt 6.2 motor & 400 auto trans with about 50,000 on them.

I put about 300 miles on my "new" 59 truck and it started to smoke out the left side. There is a crack in the 2 ed cylinder wall.

I think I'm going have to take a chance with this "used" engine as I've just about run out of money on this project and can't really afford a rebuilt. .. Ray

I just bought a military pull out for my truck a few months ago. I inspected almost 20 engines before picking the one I got. I have never been happier. The engine runs great and I have not a problem with it yet.

As long as you have a doner engine for the parts that will need to be swapped over, it should not be to difficult for you to do yourself. If you need any help just post here I will try to share any knowledge I gained in the process.

Good luck

I have a 1985 6.2L J-Code Engine out of a Military CUCV. If you are interested. It runs good. It is still in the truck and I drive it into town.
The odometer reads around 85,000 Miles.

Hey, Charley Marbles, Yes I am interested in selling the whole truck. I want to keep the axles though. I am asking $1,500 OBO. With NO axles. I might sell it with the axles, But I will need more for it.
Thanks

Have you guys had any problems locating parts for a CUCV 6.2L? I have a 1989 6.2L NA from a suburban and I was having trouble finding a crank pulley. I went and bought a CUCV crank pulley off ebay. It wasn't even close to the bolt pattern or belt layout of my burb motor. Then, I tried to find a CUCV balancer so I could bolt up the pulley but found no place to buy the balancer. It makes me wonder how much different they are.
