Have a 3 inch, to the metal deep scratch on the side of the truck. Took it to the dealer and they put a little patch paint on it charged me $60 and said that was the best they could do. Not happy.

Would rather do it myself.

What is the best way you all have found of filling and repairing a scratch like this. Should I just keep layering the patch paint till it comes up even with the rest of the paint? What should I use to buff it? Is there any reason it shouldn't be able to look like it never happened when I get done?

Truck is black.

Google "Langka scratch repair". They have some stuff that helps you smooth out the touch up paint blob after you fill in the scratch. I have used it before and it works decently well.

it will need to be repainted to look right. you can build it up then sand with 1000 grit then buff but it will always be noticeable.

I will look up the Langka scratch repair. The scratch is about 3 inches long, but only 1/16 of an inch wide. The repair job they did left the edges along the scratch rough. Couldn't I rub it with cleaning clay, rubbing compound or something to smooth it up then fill it with patch paint and again rub it smooth?

That is exactly how the Langka is supposed to work. The problem with what you are proposing is that the clay bar or the applicator will most likely dig out the paint from the scratch, or it will require so much rubbing that you will mess up the area around the scratch. The Langka stuff "melts" the touch up paint pretty good so that you don't have to rub on it excessively. In fact, the hardest part is making sure the paint is dry enough so that it doesn't "melt" the paint too much and make it come out of the scratch.

The Langka kit includes a flat piece of plastic that you wrap in t-shirt material and rub across the surface to make it smooth out. If you find some sort of stuff that will take off the paint maybe you could get a credit card and a t-shirt and try that.

I am not sure when you got the dealership to "repair" the scratch, but the Langka instructions say not to let the paint dry for too long (I think no longer than a week, I believe) or it will not be soft enough for it to be able to take off. So you might want to go ahead and do something (try what you were suggesting or order a Langka kit or something) otherwise it may dry to much for you to be able to remove it.
