can the wastegate be held open longer or all the time without havin to buy anything

For less than $10 you can make your own mechanical wastegate controller.

But to answer your question.... yes, you can wire the wastegate open or closed.

Are you trying to make it smoke more again?

Why do you want the watsegate to open later? Kind of cuirios.

Get a chip, guages, intercooler and then a bigger non wg-turbo and if you have to pull the engine out for anything, put in 18 or 19:1 pistons.

i was just under the impression that it would be a small cheaper way of getting a little more power, the gauges and chip are on the way

If you OPEN the wastegate, you're dumping all your boost and your fuel is going up in black smoke.

If you wire the wastegate shut, things will get kinda hot.Edited by: w_huisman

so when i want smoke just tie the wastegate open or is this hard on the engine

Nope, not hard on the engine (maybe excessive soot deposits?), but hard on the pocketbook (waste of fuel).

B Heath has the best system. No vacuum needed. Fully adjustable.

Now you have the extra air comming in you need to get more fuel. Stock fuel @ WOT for OBD I is only 63mm. A hot chip will put you with the OBD II trucks @ 80mm. These chips also take care of the transmission shift points. All this extra power needs to get down to the ground.

would tien the wastegate open cause the computer to throw codes

yes, you would get a DTC code for low boost/no boost and the PCM would jump over to a limp mode of some form. No engine damage just really REALLY poor performance and more smoke than burning a 10yard bin of wet leaves, tires, and plastic...lol

I don't think you realize what wiring OPEN the wastegate would do. When the wastegate is closed, it will FORCE the exhaust into the turbine blades making them spin. The tubine is directly attached to the compressor wheel which, as the name implies, compresses the intake air. So when the wastegate is shut, the exhaust is forced into the turbine blades which force the compressor wheel will spool up and force air in. When desired boost is achieved, the wastegate is opened slightly to allow some exhaust gas to bypass the turbine thereby preventing overspooling.

If you wired the wastegate open for whatever reason, most of your exhuast would bypass the turbine blades and your compressor wheel would not be building boost. So now you have much much less air coming into the engine and the same amount of fuel. This leads to a severely rich condition, thus the smoke and the pathetic performance. As a note I did a test one time - 0-60 time w/o any boost took a full 21 seconds and a TON of black smoke. Applied boost and took about 12 seconds and no black smoke save on the launch.

If your diesel is running properly, it will smoke a little bit before your turbo spools up, after the turbo spools up there should be NO smoke, or at most a small haze.

Also read the FAQ about the OEM wastegate, it will be very illuminatory. I personally think the vacuum system is THE way to go and just modify the MAP and baro sensor output to up the WGDC and overall boost. However the first mods you do should be a boost gauge, a pyro, and an exhaust. You could probably get away with minor intake modifications without the pyro but it's better to play it safe and get the gauges first. Maybe a fuel pressure gauge as well to diagnose a shot or wearing out lift pump/OPS. And then if you are a guage kinda guy, a tranny temp sensor and IAT sensor too....lol

No boost is somewhat hard on the engine and tranny when under load, i. e. when towing. It has to struggle making power and thus needs to work harder. It probably downshifts a bit earlier, too.

You won´t want that.

Wouldn't all that unburnt fuel (due to the lack of air) increase the chance of fuel seeping past the rings and into the oil?? It's my guess that there's a turbo for a reason--and that turbo came with a WG for a reason. Leave it alone. There are other ways to get increased boost--do a search on boost foolers.

Again--YOU NEED GUAGES--a PYRO at the VERY LEAST. I just had an engine replaced due to cracked heads. VERY EXPENSIVE, and iirc, you were worried about how to justify turbo whine to your parents. Try justifying a new, $3000 engine when your right foot gets too heavy.

ok, i get the point, forgot about all that. all im really wantin is to get a chip and to not buy anything else except for guages. im not wantin a lot more power i just wanna keep my engine runnin as long as possible but with a little quicker acceleration, the truck wont go good until the turbo kicks in and that takes a few seconds

JBT4 - that was me trying to justify turbo whine to ma 'rents...lol I dont think they care at this point since I have the truck running GOOD compared to how it was previously. I think I got the green light for further mods! :D
