: PPE Question
hossmp 08-12-2007, 09:55 PM Hello guys, this is my first post here on the site. I have used it numerous times for info over the past year. I currently run a 06 LBZ Crew Cab. Its stock in terms of performance. I am thinking about using a MBRP 4inch cat back exhaust and I would like to add a PPE programmer. I did a ton of reading here to determine if this is the unit I wanted. My question to you guys is which one should I go with?? I checked the site and they had 4 models for my truck. I was interested in something with the 90h.p. tune and the ability to go to maybe 40 also if needed. I have a stock trans and I tow alot and the towing is unplanned sometimes. I live on a farm so there are times that I hook to 10k and cant really change tunes to adjust if needed. Any help with which tuner would be best from PPE would be greatly appreciated. Also, if you feel the exhaust I have chosen is not correct please let me know aswell. I think the MBRP is the one only due to past experience on a gas truck. No experience with the diesel exhausts.
GMC2500HD 08-12-2007, 10:11 PM Well if you plan to do an aftermarket trans might as well buy the big dog...the PPE Xcellerator Hot +2... Otherwise might as well buy the economy and be done with it. Good luck
Dragrcae247 08-13-2007, 12:38 AM I pull heavy with one truck and just race the other truck(daily driver). With a economy tuner and boost cotrolller you can pull heavy and not worry about you EGTs getting out of hand. MBRP is a good exhaust for what your doing. PM me for more info on towing heavy. I tow 28k+ with the PPE Trailer 10K backhoe 18K. Gauges a must.
Dan@PPE 08-13-2007, 12:56 AM I would go with the std tuner (225hp 4 level) If has the ability to delete Egr/cat delete codes, The economy tuner does not. Also the std tuner is upgradeable.
Dan
hossmp 08-13-2007, 09:04 AM Thanks guys for the quick responses. Do you guys really fell the stock trans is capable of handling the 90 h.p. tune or will it give out? I spoke to someone that has a Ford and they lost there trans with a tune lower than 90, I cant recall the exact h.p. they said it was. He was telling me anything over the 40 I should think of getting trans work done. I wasnt sure if that was just from his ford experience or not.
Dan, thanks for the insight on which tuner to get. I was confused when I was looking at the site as to which one would best suit my needs.
DSTRBD 08-13-2007, 10:36 AM The standard is the way to go. You WILL use the top setting no matter what you tell yourself now and after you do that...........you WILL want more!!! Since the standard is upgradeable, this is the best route to take.
hossmp 08-13-2007, 11:04 AM Thanks for the response, I am confused though, arent the top settings way more than what you can run through a stock set up aside from the tunner? What can the trans truely handle can it take more than the 90 h.p setting? I will be doing the exhaust but only a cat back system. I have been pulled over a few times towing a trailer and had them give my truck a good look. New Jersey seems to be good for routine stops. As soon as I load my tractor on a trailer they want to stop me lately.
Dan@PPE 08-13-2007, 03:19 PM You dont own a ford! I would not worry about what they cant and cant do LOL...
You can run the std tuner on the highest setting and be fine with a stock trans as long as you dont beat on the truck. 90hp is no problem.
Let me know if I can help you with anything else....
Dan
hossmp 08-13-2007, 03:40 PM Thanks Dan, so basically I can order a cat back exhaust and the tuner and be fine with the rest of the stock componenets? I just dont want to set it at 90 and then find out that I set off every code possible or break something. I like the idea of getting more out of the truck but at the same time I dont want to cause any major break downs.
Dan, is there a exhaust that is recomended or will the MBRP 4" Cat back work well wit the Standard tuner from PPE set on the second 90hp levels I am reading about here on the site??
Dan@PPE 08-13-2007, 03:48 PM Correct!
If you tow heavy loads 8,000+ I would recommend getting a egt and boost gauge to watch temps.
You should have no problems with codes.
I dont have alot of personal experiance with the mbrp. We use Bassani systems and the customers like them alot, Not to loud and nice tone.
Dan
hossmp 08-13-2007, 05:09 PM Thanks again Dan. I just took a look at the Bassani site to see what they have to offer and nothing came up for the Chevy for a 6.6 Duramax they only listed the gas engines. I was leaning towards the MBRP based on what I have read on the site but willing to look at others if they work better with the tuner.

PPE sells them I think. I like my mbrp system they for the price they are hard to beat.
jpoudrier 08-13-2007, 08:00 PM I have the 4" MBRP turbo back cool duals and the fit was excellent. Took me less then 2 hours to install the complete system. When you couple that with PPE you are always pushing it to the floor. :D
MBRP Tech 2 08-14-2007, 10:58 AM Thanks for the support guys.
hossmp - the cat back system will work great with the other mods you're looking at. Plus you have the option to get a cat test pipe later on if you choose. Lots of supporting vendors on here can help you out or call us if you have questions....we're always here to help.
hossmp 08-14-2007, 11:33 AM thanks for the reply on the MBRP exhaust. I have one question about it, not sure if I should start a new post for this or not. Does the 4 inch Cat-back system require welding to do the instalation or is a direct bolt on application?
MBRP Tech 2 08-14-2007, 11:50 AM Direct bolt on - no welding needed. You should be able to install in a few hrs with common hand tools.
hossmp 08-14-2007, 12:07 PM Thanks, I was worried it wasnt a direct bolt on. I read a few threads here that had some difficulties.
jpoudrier 08-14-2007, 04:54 PM Mine was a very simple install. Only difference in mine was I also did the cat delete.
km2006dmax 08-14-2007, 05:04 PM Hossmp, Theirs no welding required on the mbrp, but if you get a tip to put on it make sure you put a few tack welds to secure the tip. I've had some friends that didn't, and unfortunatly they got jacked while they were in the grocery store....
dirtymax07 08-14-2007, 06:36 PM x2, my friend got his stolen. Just put a couple welds like km2006dmax said.

I installed the RBP 4" exaust cat back system and love it. It is quiet but breaths real nice. Check out my sig. Also you can't go wrong with the PPE programer it is great and good milage. Guages are a must if your towing.
Ron:)
hossmp 08-18-2007, 09:32 AM Good Morning everyone. I didnt follow up on this post but will now. I ordred a PPE programer from Dan on Thursday evening. I spoke to him on the phone about some concerns and questions and he was very helpful. At this point I would recomend dealing with him just based on the support and time he was willing to spend with me. I have a local shop that specializes more in cars and gas 4x4's and they dont want to even discuss diesel performance it seems. Its ashame I have purchased alot there in the past. I am currently still looking to get a 4" Cat back exhaust. I have looked at the MBRP and the Silverline so far and liked them. I havent checked out the RBP as mentioned in the previous post but will. I will also be looking into a set of gauges so I can monitor a few things while towing. I wanted to thank everyone thats helped me so far with my decision process. If anyone has any additional suggestions I am always up for some reading! This is my first diesel pickup and I have had it for 18 months and love it. Previously I had gas trucks and they had nothing compared to this.
