: Extra Electric Fans? Anyone tried it?
Philbilly2 08-12-2007, 09:06 PM I know not that no one wants to think about snow right now, but I need to get my a$$ in gear early this year. Hear is my problem. When I carry my plow, I have to carry it inches from the ground. (In Illinois, they think that potholes are suppose to be every 2 feet. Problem: My blade smacks the ground every good hole.)
The plow is great in the beginning of warm up because you can block almost all the airflow the the motor when she is cold. That is also the curse. Once the motor is warm, you have to drop the plow or risk overheating. My question for anyone is has anyone put a fan or 2 inbetween the grill and trans cooler. I do not want to elimante my factory fan, I just need more air flowing through the engine compartment so I can carry that blade a little higher. Thanks for any help.
2003bigsilverado 08-12-2007, 09:33 PM This is what I want to do also, place electric fans in front of radiators just so that the fan clutch won't engage as much.

I saw your post in the electric fans thread but never saw a response. Did you get any leads or not

SnowBandit 08-12-2007, 11:09 PM I have been talking about doing this a while back as a way of increase MPG towing.. Help to cool off the intake temps...

not what i am looking for unless you can fit those in behind the grill but in front of the raditatior. I want to keep my stock fan assembly in place.
Ldy AlliDu 08-13-2007, 11:01 PM I really don't know.
my 93, 454 had one, I thought it was part of the trailering package:(
what was it?

Most likely an aux fan on the trans cooler
Ldy AlliDu 08-14-2007, 09:53 AM That's what i thought, thanks.

I was thinking a fan on the trans cooler. Check out coolmyduramax.com(tx christopher on here)
Only time i ran into issues with water temp running warm on my 03 was when I was driving high speeds with the plow on. Like interstate travel stuff. Durring a storm I never run into issues. I also use TH for the most part to lock the converter and that seems to help trans temps a deccent amount.
I'm actually thinking of doing fans on my plow truck.
Trans will get warmer than the motor.
I figured a electric puller fan on the trans cooler would throw a lil air through the radiator but mostly get air moving through the trans cooler.
What kinda blade you have? They make deflectors for some blades.

In order:
I thought about a fan on the trans cooler, but after looking at moss02's cooler I agree on that not much air will make it to the radiatior. My spin on that would be to take that concept, use two fans on both sides of the trans cooler.
During plowing, my truck always remains cool. Where I plow, you have to get in to the city to get paid enough to make the wear and tear on your personal truck actually worth it. This is what causes around 40 miles of driving each way with the blade inches from the ground.
I agree with the T/H statement. I have only had one time that my trans has every gotten hot while plowing; Complete lack of respect for the truck due to showing off is the only thing that caused that.
Lastly, I have a Western Uni-Mount 8 1/2 foot Pro Plow. What type of deflectors are you speaking of?
Any ideas on where to get fans small enough to fit in between the grill and radiatior/ trans cooler would be a good start. An even better start would be anyone with knowledge on what cars/trucks would have electric fans that are small enough that are often found in junkyards. If I can find a few fans and get somthing going, i will gladly do a write up on it for anyone that is intrested.
Thank you for any ideas in advance
Phil
ratlover 08-15-2007, 02:35 PM Is your fan roaring durring transport?
Most say a fan in front will actually hurt. Blocks air flow when its not on. Plus the stock fan sucks prety good. May be your fan clutch aint doing the job. Also a tx cristopher sealing kit may help you out.
The deflector or scoops are deals that mount on your blade and scoop air down into the grill. Pretty sure western makes one ofr it or you can buy one aftermarket or make a getto style.
I'm sure you have but you play with running your blade angled and down a bit? I found that can help in some trucks.

She roars only when she is hot. If I keep the blade inches from the ground, she gets enough air to keep engine temps down. If chevys sat up higher like a dodge or a ford, it probley whouldn't be such a problem. The grill is so low that that blade has to be almost on the ground to flow air. It don't matter though, my truck runs and pushes better on a bad day then the other brands do on a great day. And lastly, yep every angle, height, and configureation possible.
Thanks again, any more info would still be appricatied

JunkTruck 08-16-2007, 09:33 PM How about a little outside the box thinking.
Could you make a louvered plow?
Only the top 1/4 or 1/3 would be louvered. Could be real cool and make it hydraulic actuated louvers.
Find a shop with a plasma cutter. Save the louvers you cut out. Re weld them at an angle back in.
Just a thought.

You wouldn't believe some of the stuff that I see around here. Two years ago, a guy I plowed with took two 4x4 pieces of lumber, put them under his hood and ratchet strapped the hood down. We call that a Hillbillly D-Lux Hood Scoop. Last year there was a guy with a older Chevy, to get air, he torched two rectangle holes in his plow. I just wouldn't be able to do that to my plow. I appriciate the idea though.
Philbilly2 08-21-2007, 09:51 PM Ok, I found somthing that might work today. Farm & Barn sells a cooling fan that is for the exact thing that I have been talking about. The company whom which name fails me right now, says that the fan is a "Pusher Fan" meant for the exact thing that I am asking about. They tell you to mount it in front of your radatitor and use it to push more air through. This makes me feel much better about my idea. I am planning a trip to the junk yard this Saturday to try to find somthing alot cheaper than the $54 that they want for a new one. Hopefully I will have a complete write up for everyone that I have talked to about this in the next few weeks.
ratlover 08-22-2007, 12:15 PM If its just for when you transport your plow I'd sujest a scoop to pull air into your radiator that mounts on your plow or head gear.
Also slightly OT but what do you run for ballast and you have the bars cranked? If your nose is dragging that may be hurting you as well.

Now this is what I need from you people. That whole scoop thing, you might have somthing there. I'm gunna through some thought at that idea.
And ballast, yes I do. I run a 100 transfer tank with +or- 800 pounds of tractor weights behind that. (I like to plow in 2wd). But, torsion bars... after my last trucks front end when I sold it... I'll just leave those alone on this truck. I have the green keys, but no load on the bars.
ratlover 08-23-2007, 03:13 PM If its now behind the rear axel its not pulling weight off the nose, its actually putting weight on the nose. I like to run lotsa weight so I can plow in 2wd for the most part too though ;) Know whatcha mean ;) :)
Check out LTS for info on the scoops or deflector things that grab air and throw it into the grill. Or make you some home made stuff :D :grd:

Phil,
What is this LTS you speak of.... It has got to snow sooner or later!
READYMAX 12-03-2007, 12:44 PM I had cooling issues in the sand not snow but we have the same problem and I put a small 12 inch fan on my trans. cooler and it helped with the trans. only. On my old truck I had a bigger fan from AutoZone or Advance that was about 1.5 ft. dia. behind my radiator. I mounted between the mech. fan and radiator with little clearance, but when you turned it on you could pull cigarette smoke through the radiator easy and the temp. gauge went down 20 degrees. I'm trying to find time to put it on my 01 for this years fighing on the sand. The bigger fan cooled my trans. and coolant. Price $35-$65 and wire it to a switch for seasonal use.
