Im looking to get a hard tonneau. both of these companys covers look nice but the leer looks like it has a lower lip on the tallgate part. it looks like it would make it harder to open the tailgate. can you open the tailgate with the A.R.E. closed. will it keep a thief out. im looking at the A.R.E. Lopro and the Leer 800 series. Opinons please. Thanks

I have a leer and you can not open the tailgate with the lid down. I like it.

I'm just turning in my 05 Sierra CC/SB for an 08 Sierra CC/RB DMAX, and I just returned to the ARE dealer to have him remove my ARE LSII. I had it on the truck for 3 years running up and down the NYS Thruway in snow, you name it. Had absolutely no problems with it, got many complements etc on it, HOWEVER, you did have to lift it to get the gate down. It locks, so everything was secure in the bed. I found out yesterday that the LoPro is discontinued, and I also found out that the prices have jumped nearly $200 since I bought mine! Anyway, hope this help!

I'm biased towards the LEER. Fit and finish are excellent and it doesn't look as clunky as the ARE. The tailgate cannot be opened with the cover closed. The newest 800 is really good looking. I have a 700 with power lock BTW- see my garage for pics.
