: Remote Starter in SoCal
biggar 11-06-2004, 05:41 PM I'm fried on tryin' to search the site anymore.
I need a recommendation on a remote starter unit for my LLY.
What brand, who should install it, or is it something I can do myself in a few hours?
I also need a pyrometer to put on my dash where the Attitude unit is when I take it in for service or warranty work.
Anyone know a reputable electronics installer in SoCal (San Diego North County area preferred).
Thanks in advance for your replies.
I'll be looking for a turbo-back or cat-back exhaust and air intake system sometime soon too.

baimpala 11-06-2004, 05:46 PM There are a couple questions you need to honestly answer before you do
your own install. How comfortable are you with soldering and
basic electrical systems? It can be done in a day easily. I
just installed my own Astrostart 2205 in about three hours. I am
pretty comfy with both soldering, and electrical systems. Shoot
Max Power a PM, he deals with Astrostart, or BlueOx03, he does other
brands (not sure which). If I'm leaving someone out, sorry.
I got mine from Max Power, and he included bunches of pictures and
other things to make it very easy. Read all the instructions and
if you think it is something you can handle, you can get plenty of help
on the site. I was initially a little initimadated by the
project, but afterwards thought "what a piece of cake." I love
this thing and will probably own one in every vehicle I have from here
on out.

arcalaska 11-06-2004, 08:29 PM I had a Compustar 2W900FMR installed in my 05 LLY Topkick and my wifes 04 Tahoe, they work great. I too am installing an extra pyrometer for when I remove my Juice, I will most likely use an autometer.
biggar 11-13-2004, 01:42 PM baimpala, thanks for the response. I have not checked in here for awhile, but it's getting a little chilly out these days and has me thinking more and more about getting the remote starter. I have absolutely no talent in the soldering department but I can crimp, slice, and scotchlock with the best of 'em and am pretty competent mechanically with good directions to follow. I did call a local and fairly reputable auto electronics place today (The Good Guys). They quoted me an installed price around $750 for a Clifford alarm system that includes a remote starting module. I have no interest in an alarm system but they said that it would be needed to make it all work. Here is what he suggested: Clifford Aero 5 alarm and install $275. Clifford GM chip key override module and install $90. Clifford GM lock control module and install $85. Clifford Remote start module and install $280. Do I really need all this crap just so I can start my truck up from the house? I was hoping for something simple like a little one button transmitter that I could use just for starting the truck. I really don't want to get rid of my OEM remote and I really don't want to spend $750+ to do a remote start. Are there some other, simpler and less expensive options? I'm willing to give the install a shot if it's fairly straightforward and I can crimp, heatshrink, or scotchlock everything and avoid the evil soldering iron.
Thanks!

baimpala 11-13-2004, 01:47 PM I would definitely recommend against anything but soldering the
connections. If only one of them isn't good, you could be
screwed. It isn't that tough if I can do it. I probably
don't use an approved method, but it always seems to work. You
don't have to have an alarm system with the Astrostart, I'm living
proof. Mine has a 5-button two way remote that lets me lock,
unlock, start, stop, turn on the seat heaters, and a few other things
right from the remote that came with it. Pretty versatile and you
WON'T be spending $750.00 for it, about half that. If you really
don't think you can solder it, PM me and I'll convince you that you
probably CAN do it. Sounds like you've got enough common sense
and knowledge to be able to do it. The remote that came with the
Astroflex is as small as the OEM one, and it has all the features and
more.

biggar 11-13-2004, 01:58 PM Wow, thanks again for the response.
I live in SoCal, so electrical problems are nearly non-existant compared to the wet and salty northeast, but if I must solder, I may be willing to give it a try. I do have a friend who is an absolute soldering wizard, so maybe he'd be willing to work for beer. It sounds like this Astroflex is a pretty nice unit, and being able to program the seats would be a nice plus too. After the Good Guys tech kept tossing $$$ numbers at me I didn't bother to ask about adding something else to control the seats too. If worse comes to worse, and I look over the Astroflux directions with beads of nervous sweat forming on my upper lip, I could probably just pay someone to do the install for me.
Where's the best place to buy one?

biggar 11-13-2004, 02:17 PM Sweet!
My closest Astroflex dealer is only 992 miles away!
I read up on thier website about the 2205.
It sounds like it's the latest model they have. You must have just installed yours as they just came out in September.
I just need to find out where to order one from now.

baimpala 11-13-2004, 02:38 PM I did just install it a couple of weeks ago. It was pretty
easy. I got mine from Max Power, just PM him and he can set you
up. I waited for it to come out because I liked the remote better
for it than the 4-button LCD display one. Personal preference is
all on that one. It is a very versatile unit as well. A lot
more is internal on it than some other modules. . . Your friend can
show you how to solder in five minutes, then you will be able to do it
yourself. . .

biggar 11-13-2004, 02:41 PM Thanks!
I'll get hold of Maxpower and order up!
